No, you don't need the nunchunk, but if you have it, you can use it to play.This game can be played by using 5 types of controller: (1) Wii U Gamepad, (2) Wii U Pro Controller, (3) Wiimote, (4) Wii Classic Controller, and (5) Wiimote + nunchunk.If you're using the Wiimote alone you don't need the light sensor bar either. You only use the buttons in the Wiimote.

The only reason it's called Super Mario 3D world is because most of the mario games have been 2D. This is one of the exceptions. It doesn't output a 3D signal to a 3D TV, though some TVs will be able to transform the image into 3D.
