Q: Base VERY hard to screw back on! Is the black bit with the battery electrodes fixed on it (on the screw off base) meant to be quite loose and rattly?

Hi when putting it back on if you look at the base you will see a mark sticking out line that up with the cut out in the lamp its self press down and turn clock wise but make sure you press down so as to seat the batteries, you should find that works ok

Q: is it bright enough to use indoors when there's a power cut?

Yes. It's so bright that my mother who has cataracts can use it for reading a book (she usually uses special ultra-bright mains lamps that were recommended by the hospital eye doctors).

Q: Is there any way to turn off the small green flashing light without removing the batteries? Seems like a waste of battery power.

I have just purchased this lantern and there is NO flashing green LED on my model. Perhaps the manufacturer has listened to people's concerns about this and removed or disabled the LED. There is no mention of the LED in the instructions, and in all other respects the lantern works perfectly, so I presume that this is not a fault (either way I am pleased not to have it).
