A no-frills ink-jet printer that plain works
I literally bought this because it was the cheapest printer I could find brand new. Raise your hand if you did the same... My retired mother needed a printer for her desk for the infrequent document here or there that she may need to print out. This was the cheapest one. I bought it. Surprise, it's actually a pretty darn good printer. Quality and fit & finish are just as good as the high dollar Epson printers I looked at in the local Staples. Design and looks wise, it's a very attractive piece, with touches of matte and gloss black here and there. The screen is a cool feature and is easy to read and navigate through. Setup was a breeze (as it should be for anyone installing a printer in this day and age). The included install software worked well and didn't include a bunch of bloatware, which in itself made me happy. Print quality is average for an ink-jet printer. Colors are vivid and blacks are black. The printer spools up quick and docs print quick, printer software isn't clunky or obtrusive. Copy function works well and could prove useful. Overall, it's exactly what you'd expect a $50 ink-jet printer to be. How reliable and trouble free it will remain after a few years, we shall see. I am confident in it and don't regret the purchase at all. Its doing its job nicely.

Press the back button and buy another brand.
This is my 3rd Epson printer in a decade and will be my last. I've had this printer for 2 years. At first there were no 3rd party inks available so I had to buy the overpriced OEM inks. The problem here is Epson printers clog constantly and cleaning the head burns ink fast. Then the OEM cartridges are only partially filled to begin with. The fact the "XL" carts are the same size proves that. This printer clogged more than any Epson I've had in the past. Often had issues with the WiFi disconnecting as well. Scan a page to PC and 15 seconds later printer is disconnected. >< Finally 3rd party inks arrived and I was saved. Better longevity at 1/4 the price and no noticeable degradation in quality. Fast forward a year and I made the mistake of allowing the printer software to update itself. Immediately it stopped recognizing the ink cartridges and fully disabled itself from any action until I inserted an official Epson cart. Even though the supreme court already came down on printer manufacturers saying they cannot do this Epson still does. Time for a multi billion dollar fine... After some research I've discovered Epson is the most aggressive in this practice. I let it go for several months and purchased a Samsung laser printer that has been ridiculously more reliable, but it's monochrome only. I needed to print something in color recently so I decided to take the time to force the printer into recovery mode and force a firmware downgrade. I'm not buying $60 in ink to print 5 pages, especially when I have a fresh set of carts in the printer and 2 more still in packaging. Success! Printer once again recognizes the carts but heads were clogged badly. Ran the "clean print head" function many times which has NEVER actually worked. No effect. I actually took the time to DISMANTLE the carriage enough to remove the print head for cleaning, rinsed it twice with warmed distilled water, gobs of dried ink came out. Reassembled, inserted fresh carts and heads are still horribly clogged. Thank God I didn't dump another $60 on official carts again. With all the issues I've had with Epsons constantly clogging, this one especially, shady updates to force you into an ink monopoly, spotty wifi, and horrible cartridge capacity I will never purchase an Epson product again. TLDR: Nothing but problems with anything that says Epson on it.

Compact, lightweight, budget choice for dorm room
I was looking for a all-in-one printer for my daughter's dorm room. I had only a few requirements. First, that it be a small enough unit to fit into a small room and moved easily. Second, that it be able to copy, print and scan. Third, that it have fairly inexpensive ink costs. Fourth, that the print quality would be good enough for everyday printing. Fifth and finally, that the printer not cost more than seventy dollars. In the Epson Expression Home XP-430 I got exactly what I was looking for and then some! I paid sixty dollars and got everything I wanted in terms of features and performance to meet the needs of a college student. ----------------------------------------------------- What I like about this printer... 1. Easy to setup and use. 2. Wireless printing from smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. WiFi Direct means no wired connection is necessary. 3. 100 sheet paper capacity is very generous. 4. XL ink (black) for this printer costs less than forty dollars and if the printer setting is not on the highest quality (not needed for most text based school papers), the ink lasts a long time. 5. Individual ink tanks can be replaced and a 288 (color) pack is about twenty-seven dollars which seems reasonable to me. I also use refurbished inkjet cartridges in my printers which saves money. 6. Only 9.3 pounds - this printer is very easy to carry or move. 7. Small footprint: 11.8" x 15.4" x 5.7" is 'ultra-compact', yet fully functional as a print-copy-scan option. 8. 2.7" color screen on the front of the printer makes navigating the functions of the printer easy to do. 9. Built-in SD card slot is great! 10. Works with AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Epson Connect. 11. Supports Windows 10, 8, 8.1 and 7. 12. MAC compatible. 13. Scan to Facebook makes photo or document sharing easy. 14. Templates for printing calendars are part of the built-in software. Additionally you can correct red-eye in photos before printing. 15. Durable enough for daily light to medium use. 16. The price is fair for what you're getting, and it comes with a 1 year warranty. Epson Customer Service is great if you need them too! 17. Comes with setup-CD, but you can also go to the EPSON site to get the installation download. The address: [...] There is a how-to setup video, manuals and how to contact Customer Service if needed. Drivers, Utilities and Firmware updates are all found on this page as well. NOTE: I downloaded the software directly to my daughter's laptop (Windows 10). 18. Good FAQ section on the EPSON site regarding this printer. Answering questions about setup and functionality of this printer. ----------------------------------------------------------------- What I wish was better... 1. NO printer cable included. You must supply your own if you want a wired connection to a PC. 2. Print speeds are not blazing fast. 9 ISO (black) 4.5 ISO (color) will not win awards! 3. Memory card reader functionality could be better if it included more options besides just a SD card slot. 4. This prints photos, but it's not a 'photo printer' in my opinion. It'll do it, but the process will guzzle ink. I'd suggest digitally sending the photos out to somewhere that you can pick them up instead. Flyers and colorful diagrams are OK though. 5. No double-sided printing, but you can manually do that so it's really not an issue for most people. NOTE: There are updates that need to be installed to the printer after unboxing and can be found on the Epson site. Utilities including: Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility, Epson Software Updater, Epson Connnect Printer Setup Utility, Epson Easy Photo Scan, and Event Manager Utility. There's also a FIRMWARE update that I suggest doing first. It came out on 6/7/16 and should help with setup issues. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is this printer 'perfect'? No. Is this printer a good choice for a dorm room? Yes! It's compact, works as expected and has very good features like WiFi Direct printing supporting both Windows and Mac devices. It's high-capacity paper tray means not having to constantly put paper in the thing, and ink costs are reasonable. Setting the printer to a lower quality print setting saves on ink costs even more. I'm happy with this purchase as it ticked off all the boxes for me without a need to compromise. It doesn't come with all the bells and whistles of some printers, but it's a quality unit that will satisfy a home user looking for a compact printer for everyday printing, copying, and scanning needs with a few perks. ---------------------------------- -------------------------------------

Great personal printer
I have had this printer for a couple months now. I use this mainly for printing labels for homemade items at least two or three times a week. I also use it to print a lot of recipes and articles. It has held up wonderfully so far. It is a little on the slow side, but perfect for my personal use. If you have a small business and print a lot, you may find it too slow. The start up ink lasted me much longer then I expected. I was able to print about 40 sheets of labels and a few other things before I had to replace the black ink. And the replacement cartridges are very reasonable for my use. I still have the startup colored cartridges. The setup was extremely easy and self explanatory on the LED screen. I think I had this out of the box, set up, and running in under 20 minutes. So far I love this printer and have found absolutely no issues with it.

Works great with a little help from my friends :)
Epson's kind customer service and tech support means I will never buy another brand again! Love: compact size, all in one, beautiful print quality, with rear loading function for use with card stock and craft papers. I'm a teacher and I needed a printer that could print things for craft projects, bulletin boards, etc. This does everything I need it to at a price a teacher's salary can handle. Best thing about this printer is the tech support. I'm tech aware but not necessarily tech savvy. When I set up my Epson, everything printed beautifully but I could not for the life of me get the danged scanner working and I needed it asap for a school project. Tried to self help on Epson's support website, but eventually had to give in and seek out professional help. A quick skim on Epson's support site revealed something that's becoming more and more rare: a telephone number; a real life, talk directly to a person telephone number! Just my style. I called, waited less than 5 mins for help, talked to two friendly reps who worked together to find a solution to my problem, and in less than 30 mins "Joe" had my scanner up and running for me. Awesome service. BTW, what was causing the problem? Even though I uninstalled the software, my old printer brand had files in my system that prevented other brands from working with my computer. Maniacal? I don't know, but I do love my Epson.

Awful, cheap printer (update)
I've had this printer for about 2 months now from Amazon. What I will say is that it doesn't take up much space, and it is easy to get it set up initially. It connects to my macbook easily for the most part. But I have had to reconnect it to the wifi several times even though it says it is connected, but my computer cannot find it. My main issue with it is that the paper is NEVER aligned correctly. I have to stand next to it and hold the paper almost every time I print something. The paper jams easily, and does not sit comfortably in the tray. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't figured it out yet. If I am, PLEASE let me know lol. I bought this for college, so I'm not heavy on the printing, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone who wants it for work or prints a lot. Update (7/9/16): So right after I wrote this I decided to take another look at the tray alignment. I didn't realize that the grey piece inside of the paper tray moves to fit to the page, my fault! I'm editing this review in case someone else is not tech savvy like me and has the same issue lol. I'm giving it four stars now. Only problems are the wireless internet connectivity and after you print there is a high frequency beep that is really annoying until you turn the printer off. UPDATE: (7/21/17): After less than a year of owning this printer, it stopped printing correctly. I went away on a trip for three weeks and when I returned it would not print any documents right. I tried every maintenance option and looked for answers on forums for hours but nothing will solve this problem. Aside from that, it's extremely noisy and shifts from side to side when it prints. Not to mention that it cannot hold a wifi connection to save its life. Look somewhere else for a printer.

Fast, clear black and white printing and good multipage document scans
I misread the product description and misunderstood it to come without ink. Not true it came with all the color and black and white ink, which I installed. Installation instructions appear simple, but they assume a level of familiarity that I didn't have. That's OK; I put it together in about an hour. In black and white the prints are clear, and the pages printed twice as fast as my four-year-old HP that stopped working with my vintage Mac after numerous Mac software updates. This week's XP-430 challenge was to scan several multipage documents, including an 11-page title insurance policy. Again the instructions were incomplete, even those I found on the Web and You Tube. So I'm pasting here my detailed instructions on how to scan to a Mac from trial, error and success. 1. Go to Mac computer Settings 2. Open Printer 3. Click “scan” 4. Click “open scanner” 5. Place document on scanner screen; close lid. 6. Select "kind," "scan to," and "format." 7. Choose pdf format (the only format that combines multis into one document) 8. Check box for “combine into single document.” In "Name" field, insert a name for the document. 9. Click “overview.” Image of document will appear on computer screen. Using mouse pad, adjust the dotted lines to enclose the document text within the dotted lines. What is outside lines will not be scanned. 10. Once certain all text is within the lines, click “scan.” 11. After computer screen says “saving image” and scanner quiets, remove scanned document and place second page on scanner screen. 12. Click "overview." Review overview image to ensure all data is within the lines. 13. Click "scan." 14. Continue process until all document pages are scanned. 15. On Mac, click “Finder” on menu bar. The scanned document will be at the top of the list. Click it and ensure all pages are scanned as desired. 16. Now save the document to your documents. 17. Delete scanned imagfrom “Finder."

There are better print solutions
Epson is a big name in the print business. Their eco tanks are highly rated and very expensive. The XP-430 is not rated very highly rated for several reasons: The initial "low cost" hides that fact that it eats ink like a behemoth blotter. After one ink refill using Epson's "approved" ink supply, you have reached close to the cost of the printer – and forget about using third party ink supplies: a recent firmware update pretty much rendered them useless. I have used this printer four times since purchasing it late last year, the printer recently refused to print because one of the ink cartridges was "close" to being empty. The large black cartridge alone is $30+ dollars. After installing the new cartridge, I had to clean the print head several times before anything legible came out, then, the printer decided to skip whole lines and print only part of a line. I tried several sources with the same result. I went back and tried to reset the paper size (letter), density (darkest), checked head alignment, etc. etc. All the settings were correct and still, all the papers came out scrambled. At this point, I’m dumping this printer and making it into a flower pot, its glossy black will offset the glow of petunias in my garden. In this terrible printer’s place, I’m purchasing an inexpensive laser printer. The biggest problem with inkjet printers is, unless you do a lot of printing, the print heads will dry out, ink will be wasted. Laser jets do NOT have this problem. I’ve used laser printers where the drum has not been replaced for years – it simply does not dry out and when you think about it, isn’t most printing you do black and white? unless you need to color printer – avoid the XP-430 – the couple of photos I printed were NOT very good. I’ve found my local FedEx (AKA Kinko’s) do an excellent job of color printing cheaply from USB sticks without the hassle the XP-430 presented. Save yourself money, DO NOT buy an XP-430.

Would not buy again.
Printing is good and the unit is reasonably priced. However the price of the ink is expensive and don't last long. Remanufactured ink cartridges are iffy because the machine can tell the difference by the chips and would reject the non-OEM. You cannot have the original cartridges refilled because of the chip as well. Machine failed after 1 year of light use. No red ink coming through. Changing the cartridge did not correct.

It's mostly a great printer
I find the print quality to be top notch, but the printer has a habit of amassing some residual build up on the top of the first page for some reason. Not great if you are looking to make neat documents. I also use this printer for waterslide decals (which requires photo quality printing) -- this printer certainly provides great detail and great quality reproductions. But if you are not careful about your print media selection, you can get some skipped or jagged lines in your results. But when it's all the right settings, the results are quite top notch. Also, the printer is very quiet! Finally, if you make waterslide decals like I do,ensure that the ink on the page is fully dried before using a sealant. Or you will get a milky yellowish hue around the decal. Not noticeable if this is going on a natural finished headstock or a dark coloured one, but it will be noticeable on light coloured ones.

Research your ink first.
Great price point. Prints good too. The ink is stupid expensive though as a refill and the bloatware that comes with it is just over the top. A printer shouldn't need 4 different pieces of software to operate. It does have nice features though, such as cloud printing and a good scanner. As a pro tip, before you purchase any printer, research cost of the ink before hand. A $50 printer with $35 refills is worse than a $100 printer with $15 refills. Your overtime expense will compensate for the printer cost.

Had I not kept this printer too long, would ...
Had I not kept this printer too long, would have returned it and ask for my money back. They say that the printer can function on fewer than all 4 cartridges at one time - that's a blatant lie. My black cartridges finished after minimal printing and the printer stopped printing and asked me to replace the black cartridge. Then as soon as I did that the yellow one went, and it asked me to replace the yellow ink cartridge. The cartridges are relatively cheap compared to cartridges for the HP printer, which I also have; but the Epson cartridges go much quicker. Guess that is how the manufacturer recoup its money on a relatively cheap printer - by making ink cartridges that go quickly, forcing you to spend a lot of money on cartridges. Well, the printer may be on its way through the window shortly. Sorry Epson and Epson seller - you need to be more honest to consumers

Slow Product, USELESS SUPPORT
The product came with a CD, guess what, ultrabooks do not have CD driver anymore. Next logic step, go to Epson's website and download the installation package. Did that, but the software didn't work, searched for solutions such as turn off Defender and Firewall, still not working. Decided to call support and after detailing all the steps the attendant tried things I've already done and finally told me it was a MICROSOFT WINDOWS PROBLEM??!!! Told me to call Microsoft which was an absurd because the software must work with the operational system and not the other way around. I called Microsoft anyways and the support will cost $129 to fix a problem originated by a $56 dollar printer. Calles Epson support again and they told me I could return the printer, the attendant gave me a ref. number for the return. I decided to try installing the software individually instread of the package and it worked. Long story short, EPSON SUPPORT DOED NOT WORK. They do not help you or Epson because if I followed the recommendation HP will be the winner. The product worked, it is very, very slow but it works, BUT IF YOU NEED SUPPORT, FORGET THIS PRODUCT, FORGET EPSON, GO WITH HP.
