my broom somehow got water in it and now it won't work after it's dried out. Does anyone know if this can be fixed?

The propeller inside the case is probably seized up, as was mine. One little spin with my hand and it started working again.

Do I need to buy a separate pole or does it come with a pole of some sort?

It comes with a very short pole, but unless you are Hercules don't buy it. It doesn't have an on/off switch so it has to be opened and closed to turn it on and off. Sounds simple but it is ridiculously difficult. And be prepared to take the entire thing apart each time you use it otherwise the contacts corrode. I read both issues in other reviews and bought it anyway....Stupid me!
