What Was the Battle of Gettysburg?

Nice, informative book, but a few things are off
First of all, I enjoyed the book. I think it's a little lengthy for kids to read and keep interested in, but it covers the bases and presents a very good overview of the battle. I do take exception with the map of the USA at the beginning of the book, and I cannot believe that the author or the editors did not catch it, but they have the state of Delaware in the wrong place!! The author has Delaware to the right of New Jersey. It's not to the right of New Jersey, but is sandwiched between Maryland and New Jersey. And on the back cover it states 50,000 men were killed at Gettysburg. Not so! There were upwards of 50,000 men killed, injured or missing....many more injured than killed. I believe the killed numbered under 10,000. That needs to be corrected, as well as the map in the front of the book. The author does bring in states' rights a bit at the beginning, but that would be something I would discuss with my child or grandchild. But the map and the number killed needs to be corrected. Other than that, a nice little book for kids and even adults that want a simple overview of the three-day battle.

Great read full of facts!
I needed a quick read as we traveled to Gettysburg from Colorado. It gave me enough information as a base for when we took a battlefield tour. The battlefield expert mentioned and took us to many of the places mentioned in this book. Of course it was a middle school level book, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. At the museum we bought a more in depth book, but will still cherish the book that started our education on Gettysburg!

Good book, real pictures
My son (8) really enjoys these books, as well as history in general. One thing to note is that the books has actual pictures from the battle and time period. My son loved this feature - there are several in the “who/what was” series that include this. However, just be warned that the pictures show the deceased on the battlefield, if that’s sensitive to your reader. It’s intense, but it is the reality of the Civil War.

Great series
This whole series of books is just wonderful. Pick a topic that your child is or might be inteterested in and these books draw them right in. My son has been reading them since second grade (end of third now) and he still anxiously awaits them as I buy new. They are by far his favorite series and in my opinion so much better than the other silly/gross/obnoxious series out there.

Nicely presented history for the younger set.
War is a difficult topic to write about for children and yet boys especially like to read about it. The causes of war are especially complex. How do you explain that complexity in a way that is understandable yet accurate. O'Connor does a nice job of that in this book. While the issues involved in the Civil War were much more complex than explained here, this does provide a nice introduction to the topic. The illustrations while not 100% accurate provide a glimpse into what it might have been like to be there. A very readable book on a topic that never grows old. Recommended.
