The main opening, yes, even for the giant Betta. The rest of the openings depend on the specie and age of the Betta. For example a young Plakat should navigate through most of the openings.

Will this work for breeding dwarf cichlids ?

I couldn’t answer that question, I will say that I threw it away because my betta fish got stuck in it and died.
