王さまのプロ意識って、良くわからないけれど、プロ意識の徹底した人が王位を継承し、その人物がたまたま女性だった、という、450年前のお話です。男子でないから父王からはかえりみられず。でも乳母や教育係りがしっかり者達でした。おそらく隣国の王室に嫁がせる準備のため、小さい頃からお妃教育をほどこし、王女は遊ぶ暇もなく頑張りました。巡り巡って王位を継承したのち、女王は内外の困難に立ち向かい、長い治世の間にイングランドが栄える基礎が出来あがりました。めでたしめでたし。 女性の伝記ながら、（A）was beheaded（Aさんは打ち首になった）という言い回しがところどころに登場し、その都度ショックを受けました。現代小説には出て来ない、血なまぐさい表現です。彼女のお父上は現代ではありえない人物！奥方を打ち首に！（でもおばさんは気になる） 現代は世襲の職業は限られるけれど、各々の取り巻く環境や境遇にしばりがあることは多いでしょう。個人の置かれた立場を「変えてみたい」と思う人は多いかも。そのまま受けてたってやる！」と思えるなら、女王に共感できるかもしれません。

Excellent book! My daughter was extremely interested in it. We bought this book, as well as the books on Henry VIII, the Tower of London and Queen Victoria from the same series, in advance of a trip to the UK. My daughter especially enjoyed this book on Elizabeth I and the one on Henry VIII. They imparted a lot of information yet were written in the form of the story that kept my daughters attention. I was pleasantly surprised at how much she learned and retained from these books.
