Review: An Amazing Knife! - I loaned out my years old camping/backpacking knife only to have it lost, so I began looking around for a replacement. I looked at survival knives, hunting and fishing knives, and tactical knives. It was hard for me to make a decision, since there are some really good knives on the market for around $100. I settled on this knife due to reviews of it written by survival enthusiasts. The blade on this knife came out of the box sharp enough to cut hair on my arm. The edge is straight and consistently sharp along it from tip to heel. I don't intend to shave with this knife. :) I bought the knife for backpacking and camping (light duty) and not for cutting hair. I will use it for kindling, notching, cutting rope, cutting fishing line, and gutting out fish, birds, and small game. So, I tested this knife by breaking down a store bought whole chicken. I know, sounds weird, but getting through slimy chicken skin and chicken bones is allot of work on a knife edge. I have had boning knives lose their edge half way through breaking down a whole chicken, so this is at least a meaningful test for me (if not comical for some readers). This knife passed my little test with flying colors and is still exceptionally sharp! It cut through rib bones like they were butter and I was able to remove the wishbone with surgical accuracy. Cutting through raw chicken skin is a challenge for improperly sharpened knives, but this SOG sliced through it like it was air. Now, I am sure the SEAL teams wouldn't be impressed by my "test" but I have no doubt that this knife's edge is up to all the work I am going to throw at it. The knife's handle is comfortable for my hands. The balance of the knife is incredible. The weight is perfect for me. The knurling in the handle and it's materials holds up well and I didn't encounter any problems with the skin-slime from my chicken test; which is not to say that I had the handle covered in it! Clean up of the knife is a snap. The coating on the blade ensures that it will be rust free for years to come and the coating held up through the bone cutting process of my test with no scratches in it. I am sure if I put it through daily use that would change, but I believe the blade's TiNi coating is tough as nails and I see no flaws in the coating even after a thorough hot-soapy-water washing. Finally, the only think I don't like is the nylon sheath. I am going to upgrade to a zydex sheath. While the utility pocket on the nylon sheath is handy, I don't like the sheath's nylon strap which will get cut into over time as the blade is sheathed and re-sheathed. But, it isn't worth dinging the rating by a star over the sheath, since the knife is what is under consideration here and not what it is housed in. This is an excellent knife and I am very pleased with my purchase.
Review: High quality, good steel, maybe a bit tacticool - This is a great quality all around utility knife. Like other reviewers, I prefer the straight edge to the serrations. If I need to saw, I'll get a saw (I recommend the unbeatable Bahco Laplander folding saw). A few notes on the features and appearance of the knife. It arrives razor sharp from the factory and is made of AUS 8 steel, which is a good Japanese-made high-carbon steel. It is not the best you can get in terms of corrosion resistance, hardness, and sharpenability, but it is far from the worst. I believe it is generally compared to 440C steel. It is very widely used in quality knives and gets you a great knife at a reasonable price point. This particular version has the titanium nitride (TiNi) finish which is supposed to give you some scratch protection and add to the corrosion resistance of the blade. The handle is very grippy and has comfortable finger grooves. I was surprised at how thin the handle is. It is just about perfect for me, but for guys with larger hands it will be small. Using it with, say, leather gloves might be tricky. The handle is topped by a small quillon, also known as a crossguard. On fighting knives, the quillon keeps your hand from sliding up onto the blade if you are stabbing something (like a person) and the blade stops on something hard (like a bone). For this purpose, this quillon is a bit smaller than I'd prefer. It's fine for a working knife. The back of the blade has a crested shape you can see in the picture and there is some jimping on the spine. This helps in applying pressure to the spine to rock the blade when cutting and may also help when batoning wood due to the slight inward angle of the forward slope. This model comes with the nylon sheath, not the kydex. I like the nylon because it is quieter on the draw, hangs more comfortably (for me) off the belt, and has a pocket for a sharpening stone or other goodies -- firesteel, spare battery, whatever. Overall the knife looks a little more tactical than I would prefer, but some guys dig that I guess. Nevertheless it is a great high quality knife. This would be a particularly good deal if you can get one used.

**Q: Where is this knife manufactured?**
A: The diff between the S Pup Elite and S Pup is the Elite has spines on the ridge, comes serrated or straight edged, black powered or statin, 9.5" and made in Taiwan.  The S Pup has many models #s and depending which model, may be 9" or 9.5".  Most of the 9" model are made in China and the 9.5" are made in Taiwan.  You can choose between the molley sheath or stryex sheath with the diff models.  This is just what I have found out by researching the 2 models.  I think most of this is correct.  Again some of this info may need to be adjusted.

**Q: Can i dive in the ocean with this knife on a regular basis?**
A: i thought i could after reading all the reviews saying it was tini coated, but truth is i took it for 4 dives in Key largo on may and it got rust everywhere. even the edge chipped off a bit. And i know i fully rinsed it with hot water from the boat cause i did. really disapointed. wanted to ship it back but i don leave in USA so tough luck. dont go diving! get spyderco altantic knife, those DONT rust.

**Q: Is this full tang?**
A: AG Russell doesn't list it as a full tang, so ... I'd say it is not full tang.  But you can query AG Russell if you like -- he'll have the answers.  This seems a good price for the knife, however. Generally speaking, if a knife's description does not say "full tang," it is not a full tang knife. Many SOG knives are only half tangs, which -- really -- is tough enough for most uses.  This is a darn good knife at a terrific price.  It's not listed as a full tang knife on the SOG site.  Other knives are.

**Q: Where is this knife manufactured? I have heard that most fixed blade SOG knives are made it Taiwan, and prefer American made**
A: Almost all of the SOG fixed blade knives are made in Taiwan. Folding knives are made in the USA. The fixed blade and folding high end models are made in Japan. Multitools are made in USA. There are some exceptions to this, but not many.My Seal Pup Elite is made in Taiwan, my Flash II is made in USA. All SOG Fusion series products are made in China. Hope this helps you out.

I loaned out my years old camping/backpacking knife only to have it lost, so I began looking around for a replacement. I looked at survival knives, hunting and fishing knives, and tactical knives. It was hard for me to make a decision, since there are some really good knives on the market for around $100. I settled on this knife due to reviews of it written by survival enthusiasts. The blade on this knife came out of the box sharp enough to cut hair on my arm. The edge is straight and consistently sharp along it from tip to heel. I don't intend to shave with this knife. :) I bought the knife for backpacking and camping (light duty) and not for cutting hair. I will use it for kindling, notching, cutting rope, cutting fishing line, and gutting out fish, birds, and small game. So, I tested this knife by breaking down a store bought whole chicken. I know, sounds weird, but getting through slimy chicken skin and chicken bones is allot of work on a knife edge. I have had boning knives lose their edge half way through breaking down a whole chicken, so this is at least a meaningful test for me (if not comical for some readers). This knife passed my little test with flying colors and is still exceptionally sharp! It cut through rib bones like they were butter and I was able to remove the wishbone with surgical accuracy.
