Great shoe, go with one size up for hammertoe surgery
I ordered this shoe, the same brand offered at my podiatrist’s office, for post hammertoe surgery. Much cheaper than paying price in the office. I take 10 1/2 women’s shoe and ordered women’s large. It was not long enough to give me room past my toes to protect the toes with pins in them. Office kindly exchanged my shoe for a men’s medium since it was same brand. So, be generous on size you order. I needed 2 shoes since both feet had hammertoe surgery. It’s been 4 days since my surgery and the shoes are great. Easy on and off, sufficiently rigid sole, comfortable. Highly recommend. Ankle strap very long. Not a problem on right shoe since extra is hanging to the ‘outside’ of the ankle. Shoe on left, though, because shoe is universal for left or right, has the extra on the ‘inside’ of ankle and it was catching on the opposite shoe and coming undone. I took up some slack with a safety-pin (on the part of the strap before passing through the buckle) and solved that. Side view of shoe LOOKS like there is arch support but there isn’t. Bottom of sole is almost perfectly flat; there’s a small amount of upturn in the toe... if you put the shoe on a flat surface, the very tip of sole is 1/2 inch above the surface. Heel has small amount of bevel. Velcro flap on front of shoe can be turned around so you can make left and right appearing pair of shoes; ankle strap works only in one direction. Happy with shoes.

Wonderful
I ordered two since I needed them for both feet. They were wonderful to wear during my time recovering from this year's White Sands Memorial Bataan March. It was my first Bataan March and 26 miles through the desert (yes, I did finish!) really did a number on my feet. About 20 blisters and 6 toenails that I was going to lose. It was about a month before I could get my feet back into normal shoes. These post-op shoes were very comfortable. Having the Velcro on the same side wasn't a problem for me at all. They are easy to put on and easy to adjust the fit. The large square toe, saves your toes from all those accidental bumps. I am so hanging on to these as I will most likely need them again someday. Well worth the money.

Great Post-op/Injury Shoe
First off, let me say that my feet are wide (I've had 6 kids) but not chubby. A women's large fits my 9 wide foot perfectly with about an inch to spare on the end. It could definitely fit a chubby foot as well since I've got it cinched down as far as it will possibly go and could definitely go over bandages (which I don't have/need). I broke my pinkie toe badly enough that the top was turned out funny and I definitely needed something to wear besides a sturdy shoe (I couldn't have gotten my foot into one anyway because it was painful and swollen). I had a rocker-bottom boot from a previous injury on my other foot and that was the only thing I could wear for about 2 weeks because the toe was so painful and had to be wrapped just so to set. Sorry for the background info, now on to the shoe review: This is definitely not a rocker bottom (although it does have a slight curve and is 10 times better than those old blue velcro post-op shoes which are totally flat on the bottom. It offers MUCH more support than those and is more comfortable. However, I find myself having to walk funny because the bottom is pretty flat (again, there is a slight curve, but if you've worn a boot with a rocker bottom, it's nothing like that). The sole does have some give, so you're able to flex it and walk somewhat normally if you want to, but since my injury is in my toe, I end up walking with my foot sort of out sideways. I've taken to wearing this around the house now that my toe is half-way healed and it takes the pressure off like a boot does . . . it just doesn't walk as easily as a boot does. For a lot of walking a boot is definitely more comfortable. For around the house, this is great and I must add is highly adjustable because the ankle strap is REALLY long and the whole top flap of the shoe is velcro and can be taken off and the sides can be opened up completely. If you're looking to do a lot of walking, I'd definitely recommend a boot. But overall this is a great shoe for recovering from an injury and the price is SO much better than getting one from the doctor's office. The only improvement I would make to give it 5 stars is to make it a rocker-bottom.

Useful shoe for foot injuries, wide if you have swollen feet
This is the 3rd time I've busted bones in my foot and the third time I've worn these types of shoes. They always help for my types of injuries. This is the first time I don't have a swollen foot so this shoe feels a little wide and slightly loose, I have to wear very thick socks, but if you have foot swelling, retain water, or have wider feet, this should fit you pretty comfortably. If you have narrow feet with no swelling, these are going to be very wide on you because they are made for people with swelling. My feet are on the narrow side of being wide, so I can wear wide shoes or I can wear standard width that are on the wide side. The strap around the ankle is about an inch wide strip of velcro, it works like an ankle strap on a sandal. I wear a size 41 sneaker, which is a women's 9.5 sneaker, and my big toe just barely peeks out from the front of the velcro. I prefer this because I tend to run my foot into things, and i don't usually wear open toed shoes, this way my toes are protected. The last two times I had one of these shoes, it was for broken toes so I really wanted my toes to have that extra room, but you should size based on your preference. This time, I'm using this shoe for a problem with the fifth metatarsal that is slow to heal.
