From 9 to 3, including stem, 1-1/4 inches. From 12 to 6, 1 inch. This is a thick watch, by the way. It's a good 3/8-inch thick.

How hard is it to change the battery?

I love this watch, but it is hard to change the battery because it is hard to get the back cover back on. I wish it had screws! Many u-tube videos about how to get the back cover on, and none of them have worked easily for me.

How long is the band?

The band, including the watch and the buckle is 9"

will this watch already be ticking when I receive it or do I start it?

No it will not be ticking. There is a tab to pull out so you can set the time and set the watch and push the stem in. Then in starts working.
