My racks are mounted on the back wall with the 48" width going front to back and the 96" length side to side. The predrilled mounting holes are spaced 16" apart along the long side and 24" on the side. Therefore, they are ready as you receive them for for both. The vertical adjustable drop straps are mounted every 48" so it doesn't make any difference which spacing your ceiling joist is since every 48" they match up anyway. If you put the rack in a back corner of a garage you could mount it with the short side on the back wall and the long side along the side wall. In that case you would need to either have 24" spacing in your ceiling joist or buy 3 48" (you can buy them this length at a hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot) pieces of angle iron to span 16" joist then use any of the holes available to get the 24 and 48" spacing at the ceiling. I installed my units in the corner of my garage, which required some creative mounting, as the studs where not conveniently lined up for a perfect installation. For one of the brackets, I ended up securing it to the wall rather ceiling as there was no stud along the ceiling next to one of the walls. **Q: How tall is that small base around the bottom edge? If you are a DIYer, assembly is fairly straight forward. Lots of parts to assemble so plan your time accordingly. It's all metal and is heavy. I'm 60+ and was able to install by myself but just barely. You can assemble alone but final installation (hanging) really should be done by two able people. Also, don't assume your ceiling trusses all run the same direction or are equally spaced. Yes, they should be and that's what I assumed without checking before ordering. To my surprise the trusts ran one direction for the first 4 feet then switched direction for the second 4 feet. This odd configuration greatly increased the installation difficulty for me, so check your trusts before you order. In the end, I'm glad I bought this rack and enjoy having more floor space now in my garage.
