NOT FOR CHILDREN- adults however, might like it
Okay, to be honest I kinda like the book. But I’m also a grown up. If this thing was a movie instead of a book it would have been given an R rating. Period, end of discussion. Such things as ‘eyeballs melting out of their sockets, leaving gaping holes in skulls’ and ‘dragons slowly and agonizingly burning to ashes, their faces melting away in a cascade of melted flesh’ and ‘acid burning through a dragon’s neck and it dies slowly, choking loudly and grasping for help’ kinda kill the idea that any child should read thisAlso the Scavengers (humans) are treated as nothing more than prey. A delicious snack to be gruesomely dismembered and chomped on whenever one pleases. In one instance, a dragon bites a human’s head off and spits it out and it rolls on the ground as its body collapses with a literal fountain of blood pouring from the severed neck. Also, the hero’s stance on killing is that it’s normal and part of life. Not that it’s just not bad. That it’s a good, natural thing. That for the world to function properly, you MUST kill your fellow crew mates, and death is something incredibly trivial. Not just death though. MURDER. Also there’s just something incredibly unsettling to read about a dragon’s neck being gruesomely snapped as his eyes bulge from lack of oxygen. To add to the list of problematic themes here, it’s just incredibly unsettling to read about the scavengers being treated as snacks. What little kid is going to read that and go ‘golly gee goodness what a great book’Don’t give this book to your kids, I beg of you. The last thing we need is a whole generation of children thinking that a little murder here and there is acceptable. Themes like this lead to internalized violence which will then be directed at the people near the children mostly all day: their classmates at school.Kids have impressionable minds, and this sort of book should not be marketed towards literal 12 year olds.If a grown up reads it, that’s fine. The plot is super simple and easy to follow and the writing is clear and concise. Which actually leads me to believe that the simplicity is what earned this book the age rating in the first place. All in all, and enjoyable read FOR A GROWN UP do NOT give this to your kids.
