Is this paper as thick and heavy as the 400 series?

The paper in the Strathmore mixed-media art journal is a 500 series 90lb 100% cotton paper and the 400 series is a 140lb cotton and cellulose combination. The 400 series is a heavier weight paper but, the 500 series is a better quality paper.

Does it lie flat when open?

One side at a time yes. Both sides you have that binded book hump. The pages are pretty good quality.

do the pages bleed to the next when markers are used?

I just tried with a sharpie and you can see it through the paper faintly but significantly. You can also see pencil if you look carefully and obviously the heavier the application, the more visible.

Will Letraset Pro markers bleed through?

In some cases yes it will bleed.

Love this product

I absolutely love Strathmore products and this one is no different. The paper is smooth and easy to blend on. It is a large sketchbook and great for drawing portraits and landscapes. Would highly recommend.
