Best small battery amp in my opinion
I've tried a number of small battery powered amps, to include the Danelectro Sweet Honey, Fender Mini Twin, Orange Micro crush, Roland Micro Cube, among a couple others I can't recall. The Danelectro and Fender amps just sound horrible if you turn them up past whisper volume. I found the Micro Crush and Micro Cube to be way too loud given their intended use. I wanted a amp I could play quietly, not at whisper volumes, but quiet enough so as not to disturb other house occupants. Blackstar nailed it here! For being a little plastic battery powered amp, this little guy can produce awesome tone, clean or overdriven, at my target volumes! Truthfully, I think this amp is an excellent investment to literally guitarists at all skill levels. Experienced players would at the very least find this amp's tones satisfying, and it's extremely portable. Beginners would be able to start with an amp that can be played at reasonable volumes, isn't too simple or too complex to experiment with dialing in tones, and sorry if I sound arrogant, but I think this amp sounds leagues better than any of the amps you see packaged in electric guitar starter sets. This amp sounds so good, a fellow guitarist actually mistook this amp's tones for my Blackstar HT5-R's tones once! I'm sure he went and bought one too!

Revised review - Better than initially thought it was
It has taken a little time to figure out how to get the best sound out of this little amp, the instructions are not that helpful. After I added the fly103 extension cabinet and figured out 1) it cannot handle active electronics, so set the pass in passive mode, and 2) the little "sub" knob adds tremendously to the bottom end of the amp, I found this thing to be surprisingly capable of putting out decent sound, especially for it's size. It's not a set-up for performance or playing with another instrument, but it is excellent as a practice amp when playing solo and trying not to annoy neighbors. I would suggest buying the package to include the extension cabinet and the AC converter. I've been playing it for a week 2 hours/day and haven't worn out the batteries yet, but could get expensive if you don't have the converter.

Just buy it!!
Bought this as a practice amp, since it had an audio input and headphone jack. Works perfect! Sounds great when using the speaker instead of headphones, too. Bought the power cable separately, so I wouldn’t have to mess with batteries, but it’s nice that I can go that way if I need to. Just love this thing! May buy the paired amp to make this a stereo pair later!

but I'm pretty sure that all the compressor did was destroy the ...
Tempted to give it 5 stars, but I'm going to leave the 5th star blank for the uselessness of some of the controls. Haven't used it in a while and batteries are dead so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure that all the compressor did was destroy the sound. It seems to have a lot of bells and whistles, but they're pretty useless. You can get a good sound out of it though and that's what matters. I should warn also that it's NOT incredibly loud. It's not really designed, IMO, for performance. It might hold up with some softly played acoustic guitars, but I bought it for travel practice. It works excellently for that. Had previously purchased some of those tiny $25 belt clip guitar amps, but they distort too quickly. This holds up a lot better and actually give you a tiny little bit of bass boom, but if you're expecting something to jam with - you're going to need something more powerful. And bigger. I later added the extension, and while it does make it louder, it's still not loud enough to get you past the practicing alone point. It's great as a tiny little travel thing. With both speakers I feel one might as well just buy a bigger more powerful amp.

It's okay, but...
After being satisfied with the Blackstar guitar amp, I decided to buy the Blackstar bass amp. It ended up meeting two of my needs: it was small, and I didn't have to rely on a direct power source. While I expected the sound quality to be less than advertised, certainly not to other reviewers standards as I have my own, I was a little disappointed at the level of sound distortion on the low end. It'll be useful for me to walk out in my backyard and be able to hear something while I noodle around for practice alone, but it's not the bass sound I want others to hear coming from me in a group.

Impressive endurance
I thought that putting eight AA batteries ( a total of 12 volts ) into this little box meant it was going to devour them pretty fast but it has surprisingly lasted several hours . I have left it on by accident for three hours a couple of times and it didn't kill it . Soundwise it is great to have because I can play bass along with songs and it will be heard. Might be suitable for busking though I have not tried that. One thing to note is that I plugged a mandolin into it and it did not work well for that but it is the bass model and for bass it does well

Three years later, it still works
I've had this amp for three years of light use, and it still works as expected. The lows are very decent for such a tiny guy. It fits nicely on my bookshelf and I play with it sitting there on the shelf when I want to take a break from my desk. It has a DC in and 6 AAA batteries for power. It is not rechargeable, but my 6 AAA have lasted me well over 40 hrs of playtime with this amp.

Terrible, weak, distorted sound... why does anyone like this?
I can't tell you how disappointed I am with this. Here's all the reasons it's going back immediately: -- cannot get a clean sound out of it. When Gain=0, there is no sound at all. Turning up gain at all results in distorted, fuzzy sound. The "OD" button just makes it even more fuzzy and distorted. -- volume is ridiculously low and weak. If you are trying to just have something audible without waking your roommate who's sleeping 5 feet away from you, this will work great. But then why aren't you just using headphones to begin with? -- the "EQ" control did nothing that I could detect, at all. -- same for the "COMP" controls. Frankly everything sounded compressed, all the time, no matter what I did with the controls. There was no subtlety about the sound, no nuances -- just fuzzy, flat and distorted. I've never twisted so many controls and not been able to detect any change whatsoever. -- Honestly, I was so disappointed, especially after reading so many positive reviews, I thought the batteries might be bad -- nope, used a battery tester on each AA and they were all 1.6v. I thought maybe I got a used or broken unit -- nope, I inspected the box and it had only the original packing tape, and the interior of the packing was pristine. I can see a parent buying this for their child who's just learning to play bass, and is very bad at playing bass, and you want to make SURE they are incapable of making a loud, terrible racket. In that case, this will definitely keep the volume down. That's about it.

Good practice amp.
I bought jt it as a practice amp . It works ok but make sure you get the correct external power supply. I didn't and blew the circuit in the amp. It still woks buy only off the batteries.

Fantastic for its size...
Wouldn't work in the Albert Hall but perfect for practicing and small environments like folk clubs. be realistic and don't expect too much and it won't annoy the neighbours but this is probably the best out there for its size - it's dinky. You'll need rechargeable batteries. I use it to boost an acoustic bass at folk sessions.
