Moving book on faithfulness during persecution
Wondering what faith under fire looks like? Wondering if giving EVERYTHING up for the name and fellowship of Christ is a reality? Wondering if doing so is worth it? Wondering if serving others instead of yourself is really as rewarding as is touted? Darlene’s book answers in a resounding YES!!! Her life is the reality of 1 Peter 1:6-9 NASB[6] In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, [7] so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; [8] and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, [9] obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. And Philippians 3:7-8,10-14 NASB[7] But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. [8] More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, [10] that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; [11] in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. [12] Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. [13] Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Inspiring Book
This book is very inspiring and encourages all of us to be better people through the author's perserverance in the face of great suffering. It is based on her experience in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. Her faith and love for all people encourages me to be a better person through faith in Jesus Christ.

One of the best books ever on a woman's experience in prison camps of WWII.
This is one of the best books I have ever read about a woman's experience in prison camps of WWII. It is the author's own story and is very well-written. She obviously walked with the LORD and her story is truly inspirational.

Incredible biography! Inspiring, challenging, convicting, refreshing... Darlene's faith is a testament to Faith and Hope greater than her circumstances. Beautifully written and down to earth. Will re-read again and again.

One of my all-time favorite books, very moving Christian autobiography
I absolutely love this autobiography. It's probably my favorite of all the Christian biography genre. It's the story of Darlene Deibler, a missionary who ends up being placed in Japanese POW camps during WWII, while her husband is placed in a separate camp. There are so many interesting historical/cultural details. But more importantly, you can see God's hand working in her life. She learns so many spiritual lessons, and we learn them with her. There is a heart-wrenching scene, that always brings me to tears where Darlene is imprisoned by the Japanese secret police and has prayed for something, and then retracts that prayer because she thinks it's impossible for God to answer. He amazingly demonstrates that nothing is impossible for Him and gives her exceedingly, abundantly above what she had asked for. And, she immediately feels so humbled. I am teary-eyed now just recounting it, and I am not someone that cries at the drop of a hat.The writing is very capable. Sometimes a good story is handicapped by a so-so writer, and thankfully, that's not the case here. Darlene does a wonderful job describing the scene and bringing you in to it. She does a wonderful job describing the horrors present at times in the camp, without being needlessly graphic.I read this book aloud to my 8 yo and 6 yo, having to pause for some periodic explanations. They are used to having books read to them that are above their own reading capability, and they enjoyed it. Now several months later, I asked my 6 yo if she liked the Darlene Deibler book, and she said she loved it and that her favorite part was the bananas. I think everyone's favorite part is the bananas, but you'll have to read it!I also bought copies of this book for my sisters-in-law and mother-in-law this Christmas. I already heard back from one of them that she's greatly enjoying it and will encourage her husband to read it too. I was first introduced to this book by a mother and her adult daughter, both of whom also loved it. My husband has loved the parts I've read aloud to him.I would highly recommend this book to any Christian for spiritual encouragement and growth. But, it's also a good historical resource on the Japanese POW camps. This is one of those books that I give a 5-star rating, but it's a step above most of my other 5-star books. This is probably one of my top ten favorite books over all genres and categories.

World War 2 story that will move you to tears
This is a book of 2 halves - the first half is about the missionary activities of a young couple in Papua New Guinea. Then the Japanese invade & the book kicks into another level. A highly moving story which is emotional right to the end. A really worthwhile read and an excellent Account of World War II in under documented and sometimes forgotten corner of the world. I would put this in my personal top ten books of all time.

please read this
This book holds a special place in my heart. My gran told me about it first, and she was not wrong when she said how incredible the story was. it tells of such a faith filled couple travel to PNG (new guinea in those days) and how her life is turned upside down, and yet, her refuge and strength grows ever more capable of sustaining her. My gran passed away as i was half way through reading this book, and as i read on, i gained comfort and strength from Darlene Deibler Rose's words. This summer I travelled out to PNG as a medical missionary. times have definitely changed, and yet, our god is just the same.

Moving story
I purchased this book some years ago after listening to Darlene's testimony on the radio. It is a very moving account of her life as a missionary in New Guinea, the occupation of the Japan, her internment as a POW and her faith and how God moved for her through those experiences. If you like true stories such as Corrie Ten Boon's The Hiding Place, you will enjoy this book.Very touching in places so make sure you have tissues when reading it. Darlene is an inspiration and her story continues have an influence in my life years after reading it. I have since lent my book to someone (I can't remember who) and have not seen it since! I also bought this book for my sister.

I highly recommend this book
First read this book 13 years ago after being called to the mission field of Romania. Darlene's testimony, faith, and endurance has touched my life personally. As she is telling her story you get the feeling that she is right there speaking to you face to face. I highly recommend this book, especially to those in full-time service ministry.
