This has been a great tool for me. I have a small lawn (less than a quarter acre) that I mow with a reel mower. Sometimes things will get a little too overgrown for the reel mower, due to rain or travel keeping me from mowing for a bit. Before I got my grass whip, I had to call a contractor to come mow the lawn for me to get it back to the point where I could do it myself. Now I just get a little extra exercise taking down the high weeds and get back to mowing. The True Temper is far lighter than I expected; I was a little nervous that I would have some aching muscles after wielding it, but in fact it's so well-designed and lightweight that I finished the back lawn without even meaning to do the whole thing because it was so easy to use. The cutting edge, as some others have mentioned, is not terribly sharp, which I think is a benefit rather than a drawback. I'm not terrified putting it in places where my 4-year-old could conceivably encounter it. I haven't had any problems with it not cutting - the key seems to be to wield it quickly. And, since it's so light, I can swing it like the wind and slash through all of my weeds without a problem. I will note that it doesn't work as well on shorter weeds. I tried going back to clear out some weeds that I had already cut down to a lower height, and while it still managed to cut through some of them, that was rougher going. For anything that's maybe a foot or so of growth, though, it's been wonderful. I would absolutely (and already have) recommend this to anyone wanting to take down weeds too high to deal with otherwise. Given the choice, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. For the price and the effectiveness, it's a steal.

I got this to help keep hiking trails cleared. It works pretty well - certainly faster and easier than a machete. It cuts through most weeds and grass. It will also cut through blackberry bushes with a little extra effort. However, there are some types of clump grass it will not cut. Overall, I am pleased with the grass whip. I would recommend wrapping the handle with some sports tape to make it easier to hang on to. It does get a little heavy after a while if you are doing a lot of clearing but it is easy enough to carry through the woods. The length is fine for me - I'm 5'2". I would think a much taller person would have to bend a bit to use. I am generally happy with the purchase.

Looks sturdy. I have not used it yet because it needs to be sharpened. To everyone who complained that it was dull, this is potentially a very dangerous item. It cannot be sent through the mail sharp enough to do what you bought it for. It needs to be sharpened, and then it will be very sharp. I am not good at sharpening tools, but my husband is. I look forward to using it this year. My grandma and uncles owned a farm. I remember cutting weeds with one of these when I was a child of about 10. I would never dream of letting a child use one of these today. They could lose a leg if they cut themselves with is while swinging it, or someone else could. We are a lot more careful with our suburban children then they were back in the 1950s and 60s on the farm. Actually I wasn't supposed to use this, but I did. I loved the way it cut through the grass and weeds, and it was a lot easier to use than a scythe, which took a lot of skill to use fast and safely. As I remember, it works as well as a weed whacker and you don't have to worry about starting the gas motor, recharging it, or finding a long enough extension cord.When I used this thing, the weed whacker wasn't even invented yet.

My grandmother used to have an all-metal grass scythe that really worked well. I ordered this knowing it had "teeth" figuring it would hold the grass for the second it was being cut, but the edge is so coated that there are practically no teeth and it cuts nothing! Imagine someone coating the edge of your kitchen knives with baked-on enamel, and you get the idea. I don't know if one of the other straight edge weed cutters would have been better, but I'm not going to waste any more money finding out. My advice, don't buy this, and, sell your old jewelry, but don't ever sell your old tools, because they just don't make 'em like they used to. NOTE: When they used to allow comments, someone wrote that I needed to sharpen this first with a bastard file. I doubted it would work because of the teeth and the baked on finish, but I thought I'd let others know.

I wanted to be able to work on the backyard weeds early in the morning instead of having to wait until after 8:00 a.m. to be able to get out the weed whacker. I might not bother the neighbors with the noise at that time but by then, the sun is up and it is hot already, especially in the summer. So I decided that I wanted to try my hand at cutting them with a grass whip. I ordered the True Temper Grass Whip based on the other reviews here. The True Temper Grass Whip is approximately 36 ½” long. The handle alone is about 14” and the double serrated blade is 9” long. It’s made in Taiwan. When it arrived, the metal red piece was already loose. I pushed it back in place but every time I’ve used the grass whip, it falls down and I wish there were a way to take it out. The blade is coated so it’s not sharp and the whip didn’t cut much of anything when I tried it right out of the box. It performed better after I ran a slim taper file between the teeth (btw, the teeth are not pointy like the ones in a saw). Though it cut vines and some close- to- the ground-growing weeds, the whip didn’t do much of a dent on the tall ones. Instead it just flattens them up when I swing the whip at them. I’m not sure if that has to do with my technique. Because I’m on the short side, I found it uncomfortable to hold the whip as if it were a golf club. Instead, I found out that holding it like a broom and swinging as if I were sweeping the floor works better for me. The cut is coarse and choppy, so your yard won’t look nice and even after using the whip. In spite of the fact that the whip didn’t meet my expectations, I decided to keep it because it does help me get rid of the vines growing on the ground. Once I cut out the vines, the weed whacker runs smoothly since there are no more vines to get tangled up with the string. Also, I can have a swing at the weeds early in the morning without waking up the neighborhood, and I get an upper body workout. If you don’t want the exercise and the extra effort, then better stick with a powered string trimmer. If you still want to try the whip, make sure to order a slim taper file along with it. There's no question that the whip needs to be sharpened before it can be used.

First off, I had ordered another weed whacker like this one, but the serrated edge was longer, which my son was able to break off with no problem. I like this one better, because the serrated edge is shorter, and seems to be more sturdy. If you use it correctly by swinging your arm back and forth, without twisting your back or bending over a bit, it keeps you from having aching muscles the next day. It is very effective on weeds, but not as well on grass, because weeds have wider stems and grass is much thinner. So, if you're going to use it on regular grass in your yard, you're better off having a lawn mower. So I would call this a weed whacker instead of a grass whip. I love mine, so I do recommend it, especially if you're trying to go green.

I love this "old fashioned analog powered weedwhacker" It works well to clean up edgework and never runs out of fuel. The neighbors appreciate the lack of noise as well, no screaming 2-cycle engine to ruin their quiet enjoyment of a friday, saturday, or sunday afternoon or evening. I've successfully used it to clean up larger patches of overgrowth without fear of hitting something hidden in the tall grass and damaging a mower blade or sending an unknown piece of shrapnel flying. As an extra bonus it's good exercise and less frustrating than hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range. P.S. I also prefer a rake over annoying "leaf blowers", sometimes the old ways are more fulfilling...cheaper too!
