Tenet [Blu-ray]. Review: When you love a great movie, buy the DVD! - I watched this movie 10x, then it went to an rental, better to own the DVD! Review: Fantastic Mind-bender - Well worth watching for Nolan fans and anyone who likes speculative fiction/scifi, and for those who like interesting (and sometimes frightening) character dynamics. The characters were compelling. You can sense the urgency of what's going on long before you understand what is happening. The shifting relationships between the main characters keep this from being just a "weird macguffin" story. Casting is spot on - Washington carries the weight of the protagonist in a subtle manner and also draws us in since we learn about this world as he does, while Pattinson, Branagh and Debicki provide important tensions that tug Washington's character in different directions. And since we don't know who to trust or exactly what Tenet is, the film has a paranoiac feel reminiscent of Inception. Cinematography is brilliant (usual from van Hotema). Music and sound are driving but dialogue is still distinct (so you can run the subwoofers but still hear what people are saying, even when they're wearing masks). I'm still thinking about this movie, and probably will be thinking about it long from now! Definitely planning to rewatch several times just to get a better sense of the complex timeline in the story Nolan's telling here. It's a good story. Like most of his movies, this one employs a kind of nonlinear storytelling, but this one has an added twist that makes it unique (I don't want to spoil what that is since it's one of those things that takes your breath away when you experience it). The 3-disc blu-ray package itself is great - you get a blu-ray with the movie (it looks and sounds stunning, as you'd hope and expect from a Nolan film), plus a disc of bonus features, and the film on DVD as well (can't comment on bonus features as we've only just seen the movie).

Just because it is difficult to grasp, does not mean it is a bad movie.
I want to preface this statement that I was NOT given any free copies of anything, and that I just a fan of Chris Nolan and his work, writing and directing. This movie is a prime example of why watching a film once is NOT the way to go about critiquing it. This movie has a very complex plot, with a multilayered script that takes multiple viewings to fully grasp the idea and what is at stake for the plot. I saw the film first in the theatre (one of few in that theatre unfortunately) and I was blown away. Chris Nolan is a wonderful director, with a fresh take on the Spy Thriller genre, and presenting it in a way that is new and fresh. I was looking forward to owning it and watching it again as soon as possible. In the meantime before it came out to own, I also bought the Soundtrack, and bought the Screenplay for the film as well. Those two added more depth of understanding for me where Mr. Nolan was trying to take us on this ride. One of the issues I hear are dialogue problems, and "cold characters". To address the first: Yes, there are times where the dialogue may be hard to hear, but that is because it fits in the world of the intrigue and sound effects Mr. Nolan wants you to experience. He says many times that his films are "experiences", and to feel it, not try to understand it, ESPECIALLY on first watch. Second, his "cold characters": This is a spy movie, his take on it at least. If you look at other Bond films, many of the characters ad calm and collected, over confident and many times brash. The characters in this movie are aware of the consequences as the "time" goes on, and there is a lot of care from the selfless acts they do for others. There is suave, swag, and serenity within the cast at different times of the film, and yes, things that "normal" people would gasp and be shocked at, these types based on their professions react more in a calm and grounded way despite the reality of the situation being so catastrophic and scientifically overwhelming. All in all, this film is absolutely wonderful, with a mind bending plot that will grip you the more you watch it. Watch it with with subtitles on first, then after watch it normally. You'll notice more and more things that show you the ideas behind the camera and the characters that should really impress those who appreciate in depth and layered film making. I hope one day I get to meet him and have him sign my copy of the screenplay I bought. Bravo Mr. Nolan.

Less Than the Sum of Its Parts
Christopher Nolan is arguably my favorite director for many reasons, so I was excited to watch this at home with theaters shut down. It has all of the things that make Nolan great: an intriguing and novel premise; snappy dialogue; a robust underlying moral compass that is gritty rather than self-righteous; a diverse cast of charismatic characters; minimal reliance on special effects in favor of spectacular and real action scenes; a convoluted plot bordering on nonsensical yet still plausible; I could go on. Nolan does a great job of drawing the viewer in and making us feel like we are one of the "cool kids" privy to a unique and hidden world. The trouble sets in when you actually try to make logical sense of what you are witnessing. That, and the fact that some of the sequences do get a bit repetitive by virtue of the basic premise. And I never really could figure out why there was a big gun battle at the end -- who are the antagonists, exactly? It wasn't really clear to me why a small army of elite troops would want to auger the end of the world. I mean, I think I understood prime villain Kenneth Branaugh's basic motivation, but as for the rest of his crew, it just didn't add up. The greatest flaw to me, though, was that the moral "hook" of the film hinges entirely on a mother's love for a child. There is nothing wrong with this in the abstract; it is one of the most fundamental truths of human experience. The problem here, though, is that I just didn't empathize much with this privileged and wispy waif of a mom. And the son is just an abstract figure viewed from a distance -- you never get a sense of his character or constitution at all. The thing that made Interstellar one of my all-time favorite films was the relationship between Murph and Tom -- it was so real and ripping. The analogous relationship in Tenet, by contrast, is amorphous and vague. So although Tenet has all the core ingredients of a great Nolan film, I doubt it will be remembered as one of his best.

Incredible. Just a cut above. And Nolan has the BEST making of docs.
The making of documentary is incredible, as is the movie--I didn't realize how incredible, though, til I saw what really went into it. The extras for Nolan releases are routinely the best I've seen, but this doc gives me such an appreciation of how this director amasses the top professionals, and they all push themselves to be better! I found myself half the time with my mouth open and half the time with a big smile or laugh watching the extras here. I'm so glad to get that perspective, and it's incredibly well presented and as much fun as the movie itself--another testament to Chris Nolan finding the best of the best for every aspect. As for the movie itself, as I say, I have new and deeper appreciation of it. I loved the experience the first time, without really getting it. But, man, this grows on you, like an album you didn't really get the first time but were intrigued enough to keep putting on--and then it becomes your favorite. Most of his movies have that to some degree for me, but this is the quintessential one for that. I know I'll be relishing every frame more and more each time I see it. The man is just on another plane of filmmaking, and for mortals like me, revisiting his work reveals more and more in such a deep and enjoyable way. It's incredible. Everyone in every department is simply the best. Thanks again to the doc for really revealing that, and thanks to Chris Nolan for taking this art and elevating it beyond its potential. I feel like when I see an unbelivable Cirque du Soleil show that demonstrates what we as humans can be capable of, only this is what the art of movie-making can be capable of. I marvel at it, and I'm deeply thankful for it. If you're on the fence, or have experienced it once and just sort of got involved, go on the ride again and again, have fun watching the making of documentary, and you'll be rewarded tenfold. It's amazing!
