Scale Studies for Viola: Based on the Hrimaly Scale Studies for the Violin

Fills need for the Violist
This is a good basic scale book and I found that it fills my need for such a book for the viola. The only, minor defect I find with the book is that the printing is slightly smaller and fainter than I'd like, but not enough to lessen the value of the book.Note that the description currently on Amazon (as of this writing) is obviously a mistake and taken from some other book. Here is a description of the book from another web site:"The Hrimaly scale studies have long been a comprehensive, effective resource for violinists, from students to professional players. In this book, Leonard Mogill has made Hrimaly's studies available to violists as well. As a comprehensive resource, Scale Studies for Viola includes scale exercises ranging in difficulty from elementary to advanced, in all major and minor keys. Transcribed for viola, edited, and compiled (from Hrimaly's Scale Studies for the Violin) by Leonard Mogill. Published by G. Schirmer, distributed by Hal Leonard."

Not quite what I had in mind
Having studied piano, cello and guitar for over 40 years now, I had a good idea what I was looking for in scale studies. This isn't it. Not organized by by types (major, natural minor, harmonic and exercises). Scale studies help to learn where the notes are on your perspective instrument, as well as building dexterity. I bought this for my daughter so she could get a headstart before her lessons, but like I said, not quite what I had in mind.

Good lesson.
Good book for my level but necessary for me to progress in my instrument. It was a little hard to find and it is a more difficult level so its a double edge.

Good, thorough scale book for viola
Good, thorough scale book for viola. Combine this with good etudes (Wohlfahrt, Kreutzer, etc.), and you'll be on your way.

This is a good scale studies book for intermediate to advance player
This is a good scale studies book for intermediate to advance player. As I couldn't find a description of the content of the book (kudos to the very wrong Amazon description which I also found repeted in several other websites, I will provide thereafter. It starts with a list (or reference should I say) of all major & minor scales on 1 octave (first and half position). Then it goes through variations and gradually build-up the difficulty: all major and minor scales in 1st position, major and minor scales beginning with the first finger (7 positions), scales beginning with the second finger (7 positions), same for the third finger. Then, scales and broken third on 1 string (with shift between first, third and fifth position, then with shift between second, forth and sixth positions, last between third, fifth and seventh positions). Then is major, minor scales and arpeggios (all scales), followed by exercises on one string ( a bit like Schradieck), on several strings, changing fingers on one note. It then proceeds to two octave scales and high one-octaves scales in order to finish on 3 octaves scales. It strangely does not propose any scales in F#major, D#minor or C# major (but you get Gb major, Eb minor and Db major instead), so if you want to practice 6/7 sharps on the staff, you won't find it in the book and only the enharmonic equivalent. It is otherwise a good practice book (or studies book as the title states!)
