Does it need plugged in, in order to charge a battery? Or can it just be used at the side of the road?

The NOCO Genius 10 is NOT a power bank. It is a battery optimiser. You plug it into the mains power (240 VAC) and connect your vehicle battery to it. It then charges and optimises your vehicle battery (on or off the vehicle). To jump start your vehicle battery with a portable power pack, you'd need something like the NOCO Boost Plus or Boost HD. There are of course other makes of portable power pack available.

I need a standalone battery charger just leave in the boot without mains, anyone know of a brand that does this?

What is the difference between genius10 and genius10uk?

The UK one has 13Amp plug on. I ordered one and they sent charger with American plug don't get caught out !
