Do I have to attath to a house or does it stands ?alone

It will need to be attach to something. You can hook the star through a branch, then stake down each string of light. You can also use a tie strap to hagevthe Star held up whenever you want to place. But the whole set itself doesn't stand on its own freely.

Does the light mode come back on the last setting when the power returns? If not what is the first setting it goes to?

Yes, it will remember your last setting. this christmas star light has 8 modes, just press the mode button until you reach the desired setting. Then turn the display off. The controller has memory function, it will remember your setting mode when you turn the device back on again.

i'm reading mixed reports on the memory function. Does it remember the last mode it was on or does it always start on combo mode?
