## Overview

The King KDS Whetstone is a premium double-sided sharpening stone made in Japan, featuring 1000 grit for fast edge restoration and 6000 grit for a polished, razor-sharp finish. Its large surface area speeds up sharpening while providing excellent tactile feedback, making it a favorite among professional chefs and home cooks alike. This synthetic water stone enhances blade longevity by reducing rust and is ideal for maintaining all your kitchen knives and tools.

## Description

Use this fine grit stone after sharpening with a coarse and medium grit to remove any scratches on the surface or to simply realign a slightly dull edge for a razor sharp finish. Using a fine grit stone to polish your edge can actually help to make carbon steel knives more rust proof. This whetstone has been baked and is porous so should be soaked in water until the bubbles stop surfacing. King is one of the top choices for sharpening stones among chefs in Japan. Material: Synthetic stone Dimensions: 8" x 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" This listing is for one piece sharping stone only.

Review: Great stone!! - The King KDS is a staple in the sharpening community, often recommended as a classic "first real stone" for home cooks and hobbyists alike. Performance: The "Muddy" Workhorse 1000 Grit Side (Sharpening): This side is a "soaking stone" that produces a significant amount of gray slurry (mud). This slurry is actually beneficial, as it helps prevent the stone from clogging and aids in a smooth sharpening feel. It is effective for restoring dull edges and creating a solid, "toothy" edge suitable for most kitchen tasks. 6000 Grit Side (Polishing): This side is much smoother and is designed for refining and polishing the edge to a mirror-like finish. Many users find it performs best as a "splash-and-go" surface rather than a full soaker. Key Characteristics Feedback & Feel: Known for providing excellent "tactile feedback," making it easier for beginners to feel if they are holding the correct angle. Softness & Dishing: Because it is a softer stone, it wears down (dishes) relatively quickly. You will eventually need a flattening tool (like a diamond plate) to keep the surface level. Size: The KDS model is larger than the KW-65 economy version, providing more surface area for easier strokes on longer knives.
Review: A great upgrade from diamond stones - After using diamond stones for several years, I decided to upgrade to water stones. After much research, this combination stone seemed to be the best option as far as quality and price. I was not disappointed. The stone arrived wrapped well in bubble wrap, but the tight bundle was then placed loosely in a much larger box and allowed to tumble freely inside. A corner of the 6000 grit side was damaged, but the stone is otherwise intact. I didn't notice anyone mentioning this in other reviews, but my stones have a distinct odor. It's not something I expected, not sure if my stones are unusual in that respect. So, I mention it here as my observation. I had no difficulty in developing a slurry and sharpening many types of tools and knives. The fine surface finish left by the 1000 stone is unlike fixed abrasive products like sandpaper and diamond stones. The surface of the sharpened item has no distinct "scratch pattern" but rather a "cloudy" or "frosted" appearance. The 6000 grit surface yields the same style of finish, but just shy of mirror polish. Using green honing compound on a pine strop brings the finish to a bright, flawless mirror finish somewhat faster and easier than I can get from my diamond plates (which only go to 1200 grit). Very pleased with my purchase and enjoy my new sharpening stones.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this come with a base or is it just the stone?**
A: Just the stone. It does not come with a base. I have not had any problems placing it on a towel to sharpen.

**Q: How is the kds different from the kw65**
A: When I did my search,it was said that the KDS is better for use with the harder steels . I find the KDS about perfect for all my knives and I have way more expensive Japanese water stones. It's cost is just a wee bit more then the kw65 so why take the chance on the kw65? One of the things I like about the KDS is the amount of good feed back you get from the stone while sharpening. The KDS and a lower grit stone of maybe 400 or 500 grit is all you will ever need.

**Q: Does this stone work just as well for softer steels also?**
A: I think so. Years ago I bought a $20 Farberware chefs knife at a grocery store, just to tide me over while my Wusthof was out at sharpeners for a week. Today I was trying to sharpen that Farberware. I got it decently sharp at 20^ . I could however literally “feel” the burr breaking off when I turned the knife over on the stone. This knife with 420 steel just won’t ever get as sharp as my Wusthof which I believe is made from a 4112 Tyson Krupp steel. I was able to get the Wusthof razor sharp at 15^ with nothing breaking off. Even the German steel is considered “soft” compared to some of the Japanese Super Steels I’m learning about. I now want to replace my cheap chefs knife with a blade made from VG10 or SG2 steel, which would take a 10^ to 12^ angle.
Will this stone sharpen a softer steel? Yes. Will you be able to get a softer steel as sharp as a harder steel,... your mileage may vary, but this will be dependent on your technique and the steel of your blade, not very dependent on which stone you use, so long as the stone is flat, maintained properly, etc.

**Q: Will this work well with m390 steel?**
A: I use zdp 189 steel and it works for it for m390 i hawe no exsperience

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent value!

This is the cheapest stone I would buy. I have more expensive water stones, but I found myself using this most often unless I really need to put a new edge on a knife. This is much better for maintenance and what’s great with the harder steel that you find on Japanese chef knives. There is a cheaper version at about half the price, but it is smaller and made of soft materials., So this one will last longer and we’ll do a better job sharpening steals above 60 Rockwell. The cheaper stones you’re seeing here are not worth your time or money. Get this as a minimal
