SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD, up to 2000MB/s Read Speeds, IP65 Rated Water Resistance, High Performance, Drop Resistant up to Three Meter, Black

Are you finding researching a new SSD a complete minefield? Theres so many out there and I didn't know what to buy. I had 3 questions that I had to answer to come to my decision. Spoiler...they are not all equal! 1. Q: is it compatible with my iMac 2020 and iPad Pro 2018? (I'd read loads about compatibility issues and even contacted SanDisk who wouldn't commit to a clear answer). A: so far it works well with both, but see the speed results below. 2. Q: what speed does it give in real life? (I wanted to have around 1000 MBPS read and write speed even after sustained use). A: I did a Speedtest (Black Magic) through the Mac and it's giving approx. 950 MBPS read and write via the iMacs TB3 and USB port, which I'm very happy with. Remember, this is not a TB3 SSD. To get the full-rated 2000 MBps you'd need to use this with a USB 3.2 X2 port which my 2020 Mac doesn't have. Speed when connected to iPad? I'm not sure yet, but I'll revise this once I've worked it out. It's very decent though. 3. Q: why this particular SSD if you can't get the full speed out of it anyway? A1: it's fast enough for my needs right now, but it's heavily future proofed for when speedier ports become available on Macs or iPads. A2: it out performed similarly priced drives (Samsung T7, T5, Crucial X8, LaCie Rugged) and held its own against more expensive drives like Samsung X5, LaCie Rugged Pro, WD Black) with regards to speed and throttling, even after sustained use when transferring big files. (Throttling due to heat is a problem with many SSDs and claimed headline speeds aren't achieved in real life due to this). A3: it's small, seems durable for travelling and has no sharp edges to scratch other equipment. It comes with a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-A cable. Both are a good length (approx. 30cm) for placement behind an iMac. A4: Its got a 5 year warranty. My question was… Should I go for the Extreme V2 (non-Pro version) rated at 1000 MBPS and save myself £45? The reviews are coming up decent as well for that one. Not quite as fast over sustained use, (approximately 800-ish), but if you don't ever see yourself ever getting a USB3.2 X2 machine, that would be my second choice.

This SanDisk portable SSD is compact, lightweight, and feels really solid. The short cable is a nice touch, keeping things tidy and easy to position on a desk. I use it as a working drive for editing, and it’s fast enough to feel just like working from my laptop’s internal storage, without filling it up or slowing things down. The 1TB size also makes it easier to stay organised by separating work into different projects. The built-in loop is useful for attaching to a bag when travelling, making it a great option for working on the go. Overall, a fast, portable, and reliable drive that’s ideal for everyday use.

I’m using MacBook Pro 16” 2020. On that laptop the drive gets just under 1000mb/s - not as full 2000mb/s but that doesn’t mean the drive cannot archive this speed, just not on most of computers these days. I got it so I’ve got a drive that will reach this speed once Apple catches up with USB ports. Saying that I’ve just copied 5GB Adobe Illustrator file in literally 5 seconds. That’s is still pretty amazing fast and definitely fast enough for me. Files under 1GB you don’t even see the status bar, they just fly onto the drive instantly. The drive does feel nice in hand with soft touch coating and it’s really really small, my last external drive was the size of brick so massive difference. This one weighs next to nothing. Anyway, looks great, handles nicely and feels durable. I was nicely surprised with USB C and standard USB cables included so it will definitely connect to any computer right out of the box.

This is a review of the Sandisk Extreme Pro 1TB rated as 2000 MB/sec. It is a fine sturdy reliable SSD but on my Macbook air M1 it is only the same speed as the much cheaper Sandisk Extreme 1TB on this same laptop. Unfortunately, while the Macbook Air M1 can use USB 4 (40 Gb/sec ), it cannot step down to the 20Gb/sec speed of USB2 gen 2 which is required to use the top speed of the Extreme Pro and uses USB 3.1 10Gb/sec instead. So unless you are sure the device you are connecting to can utilise the 20Gb/sec of USB 3 gen 2, don't buy this Pro version, but the Extreme which is also a great SSD and 40% cheaper. I was very happy with my Extreme Pro until I snapped up an Extreme and found it to be as fast or maybe slightly faster. Not many SSDs around at affordable prices that can use USB 4.

Perfect for on the go. Needed a fast transfer USB3 large storage solution for video files that would even allow enough speed for editing in Adobe Premiere. This works, at a pinch, with Canon XF-AVC 4K files and my Dell laptop which was what I was expecting.

I purchased this for my iPad Pro to backup some personal files as my cloud storage was nearly full, as soon as they were backed up, I then deleted them from the cloud, which I regret doing. After a little while I disconnected the drive from iPad, a few hours later I came back to it to backup more files, I tried to connect the drive it just was not showing up. I then had to attach it to the computer hoping that it was my iPad not playing nice, but there it was as soon as I connected the drive to the computer it stated I need to initialise the drive before it could be used, I had no choice to continue with that process. Once completed, I tried to use recovery software to retrieve my files multiple times, with no luck. I should never of trusted the SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD, I now wish I had waited before deleting the files from the cloud

Very fast and reliable portable SSD. It works great, feels solid and well made, and the compact size makes it easy to carry around. So far, I’m very happy with the performance and storage capacity.
