14" slicer is excellent for brisket & not made in China
Mercer's biggest competitor is Victorinox. Probably both about the same quality. BUT Victorinox does not make a 14" slicer, they make only an 11". The extra few inches helps for brisket. The rosewood handle looks nice. Reminds me of steak knives at Outback. Victorinox makes a rosewood handle version too. Messermeister makes a good 14" sheath that fits this. Or make your own out of leather or Kydex (looks cool if this is your BBQ slicer) BRAND OVERALL: Mercer has several products lines. Millennia - is the lowest end line, which is the best bang for buck and what the culinary schools recommend for newbies. If you heard someone recommend Mercer, they are probably referring to this product line. These have a good quality plasticy handle. Praxis - this is the Milennia but with good looking rosewood handle. Genesis, and other product lines - these are nicer blades and better looking, but other brands make them better. Maybe still a good value? but not what Mercer is known for. This is like buying a fully loaded Hyundai sonata.

Good Quality
I was looking at plastic handle versions then saw this rosewood version. The wood adds some class. However, I noticed the handle seemed a bit dry and faded so I added a coat of mineral oil (i.e., cutting board oil). Soaked it up immediately so another coat is in order. The oil brings out the natural color and seals it. Looks great. The knife is sharp and the blade is long exactly what I wanted. Time will tell how well it holds an edge.

Great Knife!
My husband had been talking about getting a 14" carving knife for a while. We both love to cook, and he's an avid smoker/griller. I bought this one for him for Christmas, and he LOVES it! His favorite knife brand for kitchen cutlery is Mercer, and for a super-long 14" blade, the value for price was outstanding. Really happy with this purchase. Since he received it, he's already smoked an 8lb prime rib, and a 7lb brisket. He says it cuts through like butter. The quality is good, but the only thing he would have changed about the knife is that it's not full-tang. No complaints though!

Needs a sheath...one star off.
For the price it is a nice addition to my kitchen. Easier than using my electric carving knife. Wood handle seems be a nice tight fit with the tank. Edge feels nicely sharpened. Blade has good stiffness with just enough flex. All in all...I approve. It really should have come with a sheath...other than that...I'm going to enjoy this for a very long time I hope.

Excellent knife to get smooth cuts through brisket
I have been using a chefs knife, or even a bread knife to cut briskets - with mixed results. neither of those could get through the widest parts of the briskets, or cut straight and smooth. I purchased this (and 5 more as gifts) over the holidays after reading the reviews. The reviews are correct. It is the go to slicer, at an incredible price. No force is necessary to cut smoothly through briskets, sausage, and other meats I cooked. The knife does all of the work. I should have purchased one years ago. If you don't like the rosewood, they do make a black poly handle version - I believe. Get it!

Dangerously sharp
Thicker cuts of roasted and or BBQ will not be safe ! This blade is a beast !
