The collection first appeared in 1885 under the title Penny Whistles, but has been reprinted many times, often in illustrated versions. It contains about 65 poems including the cherished classics "Foreign Children," "The Lamplighter," "The Land of Counterpane," "Bed in Summer," "My Shadow" and "The Swing."Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Child's Garden of Verses. Review: Best Children's Poetry - I bought this book as a gift to a friend who just had a baby. I was raised with these poems read to me for as long as I can remember. The writing, by Robert Louis Stevenson, basically is literature for children. You can't go wrong with this book. My friend is French but fluent in English. She is raising her daughter using English only so I thought this would a be a wonderful book for her. She loved it and is already reading it to her baby. There are so many children's books but so few that are written so beautifully. It's one of my most beloved books and I love sharing it as baby gifts for my friends. Review: Beyond third rock from the sun happy, Five of the brightest stars in the Milky Way! - This book was purchased as a gift for the children of my neighbor's family as I neededt to find a good home for many old books of my now grown children. This book was one of several I was unable to part with, so I was thankful to have received it in like new condition. The pages were not even yellowed with time, as mine is! I was so thrilled to be able to give this beautiful book to my neighbor for her precious grandchildren for their parents to read to them as if it were brand new, to hear the wonderful message of its lovely poems and delight in the sensitive renderings of ithe artist for the very first time in their sweet lives! A total winner!!!!

charmingly illustrated edition of a timeless classic
A Child's Garden of Verses is a childhood staple that should be in every child's home library. I purchased the hardback illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa, one of my favorite children's illustrators. The book is large and the illustrations are charming. There are a variety of full color and black and white illustrations. The poor reviews for the paperback version of this book made me nervous, but don't worry about ordering this hardbound Gyo Fujikawa illustrated edition. I ordered it for my niece's birthday and can't wait to give it to her! My own kids are begging to read it before it gets gifted :)

Good to have on hand
I remember these poems from when I was a child and re-reading them brought back fond memories. I still remember parts of amy of the poems, and it is good to have this book so that I can look them up again.

Lovely
Gave this as a gift to a 2year old. Poetry is in danger of becoming lost to the generations. I loved these poems as a child, although the copy I had was much more “adult.” Grateful that this book is geared toward the younger crowd. The child’s parents were delighted, remembering their own fondness for these poems.

Amazing tribute through illustrations to the poet
Robert Louis Stevenson's poems for children need no introduction. Over ages, it has been read and glorified by illustrators. This book contains all the poems in the original book, very charmingly illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa. Her Japanese origin portraits in her cute illustrations. A fantastic book to enjoy poetry and illustrations. Over size of the books makes the illustrations really amazing. This review is for A Child's Garden of Verses illustrated by Gyo Fujikawa and published by Sterling (ISBN : 978-0760792957)

Enchanting
My parents read me these poems when I was child. As an adult this is my favorite book. I give this book as a baby shower present often. Just read this beautiful inscription to this book. TO ALISON CUNNINGHAM FROM HER BOY FOR the long nights you lay awake And watched for my unworthy sake: For your most comfortable hand That led me through the uneven land: For all the story-books you read: For all the pains you comforted: For all you pitied, all you bore, In sad and happy days of yore:— My second Mother, my first Wife, The angel of my infant life— From the sick child, now well and old, Take, nurse, the little book you hold! And grant it, Heaven, that all who read May find as dear a nurse at need, And every child who lists my rhyme, In the bright, fireside, nursery clime, May hear it in as kind a voice As made my childish days rejoice!
