Performing At a High Level as a Trader
Trading the market is very challenging based upon my 33 years of day trading since 1987 in both bull and bear markets. Successful trading requires not only sufficient capital, a rules-based systematic approach with appropriate risk controls, but also the ability to train your mind to be non-emotional, resilient to avoid catastrophic mistakes. Often times, the last thing a trader thinks about is the psychological aspects of trading. But they are the most important. When I saw this book’s title, I assumed that the focus would be providing traders with strategies to protect against big losses in turbulent and volatile markets. As is usually the case with assumptions, I was completely wrong. There is not one trading strategy or chart in the entire book. The book’s focus is on how to perform better as a trader based on the teachings and experience of a former sports psychologist working as a performance coach to help traders reach their highest performance levels. For the last 15 years, Ward has been coaching, training and consulting with thousands of traders and fund managers at well-known firms, hedge fund managers, asset managers, and prop firms, as well as a few “Market Wizards” (Schwager’s book), among others. Ward is also the author of High-Performance Trading (2009) which is next up on my reading list. This softcover volume of 251 pages is divided into nine parts containing 25 chapters of between 18 to 25 pages each. He covers many illuminating topics including: why bullet proof in the first place, know your values, commit to action, manage your risk, embrace uncertainty, get comfortable with being uncomfortable, work with your stress-based emotions, don’t beat yourself up, adapt to change, monitor your stress and fatigue levels, and develop you physiological fitness, among others. As a trader, the key to success is to bullet proof you against a bad run in the market or a big loss causing irreparable psychological and financial damage. Bullet proofing will allow the trader to stay in the trading game instead of being knocked out by a big catastrophic event. One key is for the trader to manage his mood and thoughts as they appear throughout the trading day, as well as being comfortable with the worst-case scenario. Therefore, the trader needs to develop a playbook of skills to become bullet proofed, according to the author. The author spent considerable time focusing on psychology, physiology and philosophy so that the trader would decide to steer through them more effectively by turning them into a benefit. The author’s overriding goal was to provide actionable knowledge and insights that a trader can integrate into his/her repertoire while reducing stress, challenges and the demands of trading in volatile markets. Based upon the contents of this book, Ward has accomplished his mission. The key is to manage these factors. Numerous exercises are woven throughout the book to keep the reader engaged and to reinforce key concepts which are all evidence-based. Findings from studies of military, law enforcement, elite athletes and performing artists are imbedded in the text.Another goal was to provide traders with a practical approach to dealing with the mental, physical and emotional challenges faced daily on the market battlefield. He also provides the most current research insights into biofeedback, “third wave” of psychological methods and techniques based on ancient performance philosophy.Numerous exercises and activities are provided by the author who believes that working through them will allow traders to get the most out the book. Every trader has developed some good skills, but every trader can also improve their performance in many ways, and that is what this book is all about, better training the mind to work as well as it can to produce the best results.

Another brilliant timeless offering from mastermind Steve Ward
Steve is an incredible author and his strategies can expand multiple verticals. I first found his works about 5 years ago and have read just about everything he has put out. I play Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) professionally and no author has done for my game than Steve. Bulletproof Trader is the latest addition to Steve’s arsenal of tools for us risk takers and risk embracers. I also spend time daily studying Stoicism. Seeing Steve bridge the gap started by Ryan Holiday into trading is a perfect addition to his new work. Specifically in this book, Steve’s suggestion on how risk affects your psyche and your approach and the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit when embracing and taking risks each day is an absolute game changer. This book is helping me to take my DFS game to the next level. I highly recommend this book and all the others in Steve’s library. I can’t thank him enough for all he’s done to help me!

Gotta get some trading under your belt before this book becomes really valuable
I have read, studied, and lived a ton of trading books over the last 30 years. I love this book because it is different and deals with such an important subject. The space between your ears is the most important thing in trading; not a strategy, program, market, etc. Steve does a great job of simplifying the important parts of being a bullet proof person along with being a bullet proof trader. Highly recommend!!!!

At last a really helpful book based around trading.
I've been learning to trade for a while, watched numerous videos and attended so many webinars I've lost count. But this book has undoubtedly had the biggest effect on my trading. Amazing book full of excellent techniques you can use to improve the way you think about trading. There is so much misinformation out there about trading it's a great relief to finally find something that gives you the facts. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to get into trading.

Very basic book
I was quite disappointed with this book, it has some actionable steps but very very basic stuff. The book could have been half of the number of pages, it has extra large titles and lots of exercise blank pages. Steve didn't go in depth on each topic which felt very vague. If you are looking for something that is truely helpful, with loads of in-depth trading psychology content, I recommend The Mental Game of Trading. The only book you need. I felt like I wasted my time with this one as I didn't get anything new from it.
