I was able to change my boot settings to boot off of the DVD and it allowed to go into repair mode and run the Windows repair process. When the PC rebooted, everything is back to normal. The first time I tried this recovery disk, no results. Then it occurred to me that the problem might be the Nvidia graphics card. So, I plugged the monitor into the on-board Intel graphics connection and tried this recovery disk again -- and the PC booted.
