## Description

I Shardana is set in a free Sardinia, an island where rigorous rules are in force and it's people do not tolerate invasions or spiritual contamination, a time when - as Ennio Porrino (b. 1910) specifies in the score - shepherds were warriors and judges, "when man did not believe in one God but in the power of the stars, and worshipped the dead and the waters". The opera's first drafts date from 1934-35, but the work only debuted years later, on 21st March 1959, at the San Carlo theatre in Naples, with it's final title of I Shardana and Porrino himself conducting. The composer would die suddenly a few months later.

Review: Fantastic mix of excellence from the music and design to the variety of performances - I Shardana, a world premiere performance of an opera composed by Ennio Porrino (b. 1910 in Cagliari, Sardinia) about ancient Sardinia performed in the Lyric Theater of Cagliari, was too interesting to pass up. The performers worked on or behind one rocky slab held up at an angle by supporting poles. Besides a chorus and principal singers, there was also a corps of highly disciplined dancers/performers who acted as symbolic soldiers/acolytes, and a thrilling song near the close by a famous Sardinian folksinger (Elena Ledda). Finally, the star of the piece had to be D-WOK, an Italian video "entertainment design" company, integrating video imagery into live performances. The director of this performance, Davide Livermore, created an overwhelming tumultuous sea on video sometimes in front of but always behind the set and performers in perfect sync with the music and actions on stage. Sometimes it was a relatively calm blue-grey, perhaps gradually turning a deep red with a bloody execution or raging as though burying the set in a violent storm. It served as a constant reminder of the tenuous nature of this Bronze Age island culture.
Review: A REDISCOVERED MASTERPIECE! - I can't believe Ennio Porrino has managed to stay under my opera radar for so long. "I Shardana" picks up folklore from Sardinia, It is is a mixed media production with echoes of Oedypus Rex in its use of ritiualized puppets, bit both of Stravinsky and Carl Orff, and plenty of Wagner, but the result is completely original. . Most of the cast is is Sardinian-born, including the phenomenal Paoletta Marrocu, whom I have had the pleasure of encountering in other DVD's. let me say it will keep it on the edge of your seat; one of the most amazing "total operas" I have witnessed. Fantastic production, fantastic voices. The libretto? Well, when all is said and do, quite trite: two boys, one girl, and everyone dies. But what a way to go!!!!! Kudos to Davide Livermore, the Director; Marco Nateri, the costume designer and the rest of the crew who made this production possible. By the way, I am right now listening to my first Porrino CD.

This is really unusual and really special. See Alfredo R. Villanueva's review for a proper description. I'm just posting to provide another 5 * review, which this recording deserves!
