The wires are not color coded. Which wire is positive and which is negative?

The end of the wire near the exposed leads is not covered by the rayon cloth and reveals a ribbed side of one wire which is the neutral (also goes to the wide blade on the plug) and the other lead has writing stamped on the insulation and this is your hot wire.

What is the cord width? Is it under 1/4 or an inch like 3/16 ?

It is a fat 1/4” closer to 9/32” . This is a very nice cord for restoration of an old lamp

Can this be used with a dimmable socket?

Hello... This wire can be used with a dimmable socket. The wire is rated at 120 volts and that voltage must not be exceeded. Any varying voltage less than 120 volts, for dimming a light, should have no effect on this wire. The amp load should be monitored to insure it remains within a safe level. However, powering a light should be OK.

Can this be used for a 3 way bulb

If it requires a ground wire, no. The cord only has a 2-way wire. You could ground out the ground point but that will not give you safety of a 3-way wire with a ground, especially if the bulb is a higher watt/older style bulb. You could change out the light bulb to a 2-way LED modern bulb socket and this would allow you to use the more energy efficient, low watt, safer style bulb. The new LED bulb can offer you a range of styles from “old style” dimmable Edison bulb to a “flame” style bulb....
