I'm putting on an addition to our house. When digging the hole for the foundation, we hit ledge about 6 feet down. This would have severely limited our basement ceiling height. The ledge consisted of a mix of gray NH granite and some insanely hard black rock. I had to take off about 1.5 feet of ledge to get to a 7 foot basement ceiling. We will end up owing the excavator about $1000 in machine time for beating on it with the hammer he has on his skid steer. A larger machine was not available. For that machine time, we took out the two highest peaks, but the vast majority of it remained. So I gained about 1/2 foot this way. The excavator did not have any good solutions for me. I went on the web and found Dexpan. Watched a few youtube videos and convinced myself that I had a shot at this. The excavator and foundation guys were both very skeptical, but hey, when you're desperate, you'll try anything. The first day I drilled 30 holes as a test. The next day I saw a few cracks appearing. I ended up drilling about 120 3/4" holes 10 inches deep each. Holes were drilled about 6 inches apart, and were carefully chosen to take advantage of existing fracture lines in the ledge. Took about 8-10 hours of drilling time. The Dexpan succeeded with cracking up the ledge to the extent that the excavator could come back with his skid steer hammer and bust it all out in about an hour. I got an additional 1 foot of ceiling height out of this and now we are finally ready to pour the foundation. DEXPAN ROCKS!!!!! Forgive the pun. By the way, I think I would have been better to have ordered lower temp range Dexpan. Some of my cracks took a couple days to even start. I think with the lower temp product, it would have gone faster.

Dexpan Expansive Demolition Grout gets the job done. We used it for 2 different applications and it really impressed us on its performance both times. The main reason we were using the Dexpan was to demolish a small concrete pad in a location where it would be difficult to use large tools. The holes were drilled per instructions and the grout was mixed per instructions. After mixing it has a soup like consistency. After pouring the grout into the holes, we left it for about 16 hours before checking on it. The pad was completely demolished and the concrete floor beneath the pad was left undamaged. Clean-up was just as easy as using the product. For the second application, we used it to break a large boulder on a hillside that needed to be removed. The same process was done as we did in the first application and the next morning, the boulder was broken up into pieces small enough to carry by hand. Overall, it is a great product that works very well. The main benefit being that it saves time and money by eliminating the need to use heavy equipment and tools. It is very simple to use and is very effective following the instructions for use. The only thing of concern is that it has a very high PH making it a dangerous substance to use and can be harmful if it get on the skin. However using proper personal protective gear such as rubber gloves and safety glasses mitigates the risk. It also washed off the skin with soap and water. I highly recommend this product for its intended use. It is easy to use, effective, and save time and money.

Does not disappoint. Have bought several times. Use according to directions and we break hard blue rock every time. Don't breathe the dust. Be patient for 24-48 hours, as it continues working. One can hear the rock break!

I needed to remove some granite ledge near my garage, and I highty recommend this stuff after having used it! I drilled eleven 1.5" holes in the granite ledge, but only filled 10 with Dexpan for the first round (used 1 bag). My holes were at 58 degrees when I started filling (8am) and the daytime temps were in the low 80s. I used the #2 Dexpan (55-77 degrees). I mixed with refrigerated water too. The holes near base/gravel were about 7-8" deep and at about a 45 degree angle. The upper holes were 12-13" deep and vertical. All the holes were about about 12-14" apart. I started with an upper hole that had the steepest face near it, figuring it could crack/expand the easiest, and then I made a clockwise pattern from there. I had a couple of slight cracks at the 10 hour mark (none at the 8hr mark). By the next morning I had more cracks and wider cracks. I gave it a 72 hours to make sure it did all the work, and it started to mushroom up about 48 hours in, most likely from the lower holes that were on an angle as planned. The end result was some big chunks of rock on the outside (but easily liftable), the middle layer was obliterated (3-5" pieces/slivers and smaller), and then some much larger (to heavy for me to lift) pieces down deeper. There are more cracks still, but I have removed most of what I wanted to remove. I'm impressed and pleased.

I have used this product several times in the past few years at ambient temperatures between 30 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You must use the temperature-appropriate version. All my use has been in granite boulders, some the size of small cars, and it works. I use a 1.5" carbide tipped, SDS-max, rotary hammer and only use drill bits made by Bosch. If you cannot drill 85% of the way through the material as suggested (and I often cannot even with 29" long SDS-max bits) I simply place my holes closer than 12" on center (8" or 10" on center). It is critical to have an air compressor on hand with a long wand to blow the dust out of the holes before pouring in the Dexpan. Do not think you can vacuum it out. It is also critical to mix the Dexpan with a strong metal (not plastic) paint mixer attachment for a power (corded) drill. It is like mixing heavy, thick cake batter and the mix will wear out a cordless drill after a couple of 5 kg (11 pound) bags and will snap a plastic drill-mounted paint stirrer. While the packaging says the mix will typically work in 2-8 hours, I have found granite boulders can take as much as 24-36 hours for the product to exert all its force. Finally, wear a dust mask during the drilling and during the mixing of the Dexpan. You don't want to be inhaling any of that dust.

I used this in the middle of summer so I bought the highest temperature rated version of Dexpan to break up some large boulders and bedrock outcropping in my backyard. After I learned how to use it properly, this product broke up the large boulders into pieces small enough to haul away in my truck. You have to read and follow the instructions carefully for the best results. If you mix it too thick (which I mistakenly did the first time) it may blow out the top of the hole instead of cracking the rock. I recommend using a paddle drill to mix this stuff. Be careful not to get it on your skin. Also, it works best if you have the drill holes properly spaced. I would also recommend using a drilling depth gauge. When drilling some of the boulder holes I accidentally went to far and drilled through the other side! If my drill had a depth gauge it could have prevented that. I would give Dexpan 5 stars but am deducting 1 star because I think it is expensive.

This stuff is the cat's a**. You drill the holes and fill with dexpan and wait. I had 3 large granite outcropping at our camp in northern Nh. I am retired so I had the time and did not want to wait for and excavator to come in with a jack hammer nor did I want to incur the expense. I admit, I did not follow the instructions. It says to drill 1.5 inch holes and go down 80% of the depth. I bought a cheap harbor freight hammer drill with a warranty. I knew I would burn out the drill and I did. My largest bit was 1" and I could only drill 20 inches or so but everyone was amazed at what this stuff does. My 3 outcroppings were at least 5 feet deep and two were longer than my John Deere 1025 tractor. Just let the drill do its job, do not force it, mix your dexpan, pour and wait, BE PATIENT? Sometimes it took four days for the cracks to appear but wow, then I would put my back hoe bucket on it and it would fragment. Due to the size of each outcropping it took me several sessions with the dexpan to whittle my boulders down but it did the job. Great stuff. FYI, i went went through 3 boxes of four bags per box.

Be patient , it will crack anything . This massive boulder was too heavy (20,000lbs) to move with my excavator. It was roughly 8'x8'x4' , i drilled 6 x 1.5 inch 18 inches deep and after 24 hours it cracked all the way through

Dexpan is absolutely a miracle! drill a few holes mix it up pour it in. 12 hours it's cracking 48 hours clean it up! looks like 2 more drill holes will clean it up! no more tripping in the driveway i've used it to break up a cement pillar.
