Seems to work
October 22, 2025 Update I had a professional who works with the county health department come out and gather a water sample. He called today to confirm that we did indeed have bacteria in our water, so the test from Safe Home for bacteria did work. The test from Safe Home told us we had bacteria in the water, and the county health department took it one step farther and identified the specific type of bacteria, which was total coliform. Original Review: The test confirmed the presence of bacteria in our well water. I will check it against a professionally completed one by our county next month because of the positive result of bacteria in our water. It is easy to use, but it's important to follow directions to get it right. They tell you not to overfill the bottle with your water sample. My recommendation is to use a very slow flow of water from the faucet and keep checking the water level. If it seems to still be yellow after 24-48 hours, shake it to be sure it's still yellow. At first showed a yellow color that seemed to mean it lacked bacteria, but after 2 days I shook it and it turned green. They do suggest shaking it. The test can be completed quickly. I made sure I cleaned the faucet carefully with Chlorox, ran the water for the recommended amount of time, and had clean hands to be sure I didn't add any bacteria to the test. The test is fairly inexpensive and seems to be a good value for the money. I'm sure the professional test will cost me more, but it will be interesting to see how this test compares with the professional test. The main difference I can think of with regard to this test and the professional test I will get is that this test doesn't break down what bacteria is actually in the water. I just shows a blue or green color that suggests there is the presence of bacteria.

Easy to use and read! HIGHLY recommend!
My wife recently had a Kidney Transplant. With all the immunosuppressant meds she is on, we have to be careful of bacteria. Our Summer cottage has well water, which her transplant team say she should absolutely avoid. This water test kit was so EASY to use! It gave us piece of mind about the lack of bacteria in our well water. Although my wife can't drink or brush her teeth with the water, we aren't worried to wash dishes or bathe in it. OUTSTANDING kit!

It works.
Purchased this to test our well water after the replacement water pump was installed and the seal to the well cap was broken. Came up with positive test for water contamination. Took a sample to our local water lab and confirmed bacteria in the well. Use 10 gallons of bleach to clean it up before getting negative results for bacteria. A year later the same thing even after replacing the well head. The test acknowledged there was bacteria in our well and had a local company come out and disinfect the well. Basically chlorine tablets. I am going to test regularly with this product for bacteria and will be using a uv led to sanitize the water. Overall it is economical and provides accurate information.

Good first check
Looks good and works, but not as well as the County tests. Test kit said good on e-coli and no other bacteria, but the county found traces of bacteria not detected by test kit.

Great peace of mind!
I recently got a GI infection (confirmed bacteria via testing with GI doctor) and I had a horrible feeling it could be my well water. This gave me such a quick peace of mind while waiting for the results of my official county issued water test. My water came back clean on this test, which matched the results I later got from the county! Accurate and easy to use. You may notice some random particles floating around by the 72 hour mark, and this is normal. :) Just pay attention to the color of the water at the end of the testing period.

24 TO 72 HOURS FOR RESULT - culture growth optimum temp is 95.5โฐ!
Trust. The advertisement send to be misleading. The pictures tall of de texting 50 bacteria. The fine print is 50 bacteria, but only if the chloroform family - ecoli. They say results in as little as 24 hours. If the test is negative, you have to leave for an additional 48 hours. (Total 72.) AND THEY DAY NOTHING ABOUT THE TEMPERATURE. THIS IS NOT A TEST PER SE, BUT A CULTIVATION OF YOUR WATER. I'M THE FINE PRINT, OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE IS 95.5โฐ! So this this why the wild swing from 24 hours to 72 hours for a result. I find the warmest place in my home to leave the samples. They stayed the light yellow color - negative - and no shade of green or blue - positive. I bought these as I have continued red rings that grow from clean water in both toilets. Again. My "test" culture growth results were apparently negative from the 2 sinks in my home. But because of the marketing jargon, I'm left with an uneasy feeling to trust the results. Science likes honesty. I hope my $41 pack of 4 tests were worth it. They appear to have worked. But I still have these red rings I have to do more Google work to find out about.

I bought three so you can feel confident buying only one
I was concerned about the safety of the water coming from my rainwater tanks, on a farm that relies on it for drinking water. I wanted to be sure that the test results would be accurate so I bought three of these and used two as controls - * One had chlorinated town water and remained yellow (negative) for a full week, * One had bacteria-laden water from the fish tank, and turned green (positive) on the third day. So I feel confident about the results from the third one, which was the actual test (and unfortunately also turned green on the third day).
