Worls fine for my 55, easy install.
I've had my 55 gallon fish tank for a few years now and just recently my original whisper ex70 that came with it started not sucking in or putting out as much water as it should. I tried everything I tried cleaning it I tried making sure it was unclogged everything and it's still didn't want to work up to par and was causing my fish tank to be dirtier than it should and causing my fish to be stressed. I decided just to buy a new one and I already know how to use this specific model and have replacement filter inserts for them so I just got the same one. It's pretty easy to use it comes almost completely set up. When you get it out of the box all you have to do is open the filter packages and put them right back in where they already were. You're going to want to put it on the back of your fish tank and connect the downstem which is the piece that sucks in the water. It comes with three different pieces so you can adjust the height for the tank that you're using I didn't use one of the pieces because I didn't want it to go down that far. all you do at that point is plugged in. If it doesn't suck up enough water to fill the reservoir and get started by itself you can simply scoop some water out of your fish tank and put it into the reservoir. When I started it it filled up all by itself and went instantly without any problems. this filter comes with two charcoal filters which are not my favorite of these products because the clip on the top of those holders seems to come apart which makes them harder to replace but you can still do it. I like to take them out and rinse them out every so often and replace them every couple of months. overall my first one lasted me a few years and I'm hoping this one last me a few more

Great Little Unit - Quiet & Powerful
I purchased 2 of the Whisper EX30 units for my 33 gallon long tank. Both work flawlessly and quietly. I even took a short video of them. Finally the air circulation system in the building shut off so I could tape this (Very rare, building owner doesn't like people suffocating in the building and dying I guess), both of these units run quietly enough together that the little bubbler is louder then them. The video is filmed in dead silence in the middle of the night. TV easily drowns these out. They do make a little hum, not a big deal, they all hum a little. These truly are whispers, if yours isn't, talk to someone about it and get it replaced, you have a defective unit. Neither has given me any trouble, both work the same and are very reliable. You can also see the water is crystal clear, my water is never any worse then it is in the video, even right before a bi-monthly water change. Only thing that bothered me, not enough to take away a star, was it is a little snug on the tank, good in some cases, I just like a bit of play because down the road if they ever do start vibrating or such, I could put a thin foam pad between them and the tank and loud pumps go quiet then. Did that with the Aqua-Tech I had prior to these because it screamed like a banshee right outta the box. Seriously impressed with these units though, and fitting snugly is probably a good thing. And by snug I mean, it fits like a glove, no forcing it on or anything, fits right down as it should, but has no play. Like it was machined to fit (On my tank anyhow). PS - Disappointed with the FEDEX guy though, slacker entered delivery attempt when none was made since I was here the whole time, gate unlocked and open. No door tag provided, secretary and surveillance cams saw no sign of him anywhere that day, didn't even drive past. Had to pick this up 2 days later and talked to manager. Disciplinary action took place before I had even left, glad I wasn't that guy, they were really tearing a strip off him.

Great filtration, but unbearable noise levels
I have a hexagonal tank that is tall and thin, meaning filters for rectangular tanks with the same size rating can struggle to create good circulation in the bottom half of the tank. I sized up to the EX 20 to get a higher flow rate. This unit does a great job with both mechanical and biological filtering and my entire tank is turning over much better now. Also, it does not create too much current for my tiny Oranda goldfish, which can be a problem with more powerful filters since they tend to be poor swimmers. My only drawback is that this thing can be LOUD, and I mean LOUD, if it isn't situated exactly so on the back of your tank. There is a small rubber bump on the bottom of the housing that helps balance the back of the unit against the rear glass, but it also creates a vibration point. I ended up sticking a tiny piece of craft felt between the bump and the glass to help dampen the noise, and so far so good. I also put a narrow strip of felt near the top edge of my tank since there is a lip that sometimes vibrated against the housing. Overall, quality seems good/ sturdy construction and it was very easy to set up and clean. UPDATE 1/15/2018: Filter has become unbearably loud, even with my DIY sound dampers. The filter itself is now making a loud rumbling noise that I can't fix. I have tried disassembling and cleaning all of the moving components several times and adjusting how it sits on the tank, but it doesn't help at all. Something is wrong with the powerhead itself and it has become so loud that it interferes with watching TV in the living room and I can hear it when I'm trying to sleep. I've taken it apart and there is nothing visually wrong with the unit, and I use large gravel substrate that could not be sucked into the filter to damage it. I'm outside the return window for amazon, but I did register for the Tetra warranty and I will be returning this thing ASAP. Extremely disappointed that it deteriorated so quickly.

Nice Filters
These are nice filters. I'll go over the pro's and cons and why this is a 4 star vs 5. Pros: Great flow, internal pump so no need to worry about a power outage, can handle a decent sized tank, two on my 55g are more than enough. Cons: Its not quiet, if the water in your tank is low you'll hear the waterfall very much so which is typical of any HOT, but the pump's are not quiet on top of it, so even with a high water in your tank the pump's are still rather noisy in my opinion. Overall assessment, if the pump's were quiet these filters would be a no brainer. I will continue to run them due to keeping things really clean, but the noise is annoying at times.

Best choice filter
Immediately satisfied. I have a small 20 gallon tank with same filter but it’s maximum rated capacity was 20 gallon same brand /style. It was good but not enough filtration capacity. So I ordered this large 70 gallon capacity. It’s turning the water over through the filter pads in less than an hour scrubbing the water clean. I realized quickly that the small 20 gallon simply wasn’t enough filtering power. I have 5 goldfish so for 20 gallon that’s about maximum population so needed better filtration. I like the easy of filter media change out. No mess no time consuming maintenance. I did consider a couple of canaster filters on Amazon and thought that’s way to time consuming to open it up and rinse out the trays then reload it with 5 different filter media reseal the can and reinstall it. Way too much time involved I recommend this filter to anyone not interested in spending several hours. It’s overkill for my size tank and so it should really to a great job filtering out contaminate. The pickup intake tube goes to the bottom of tank nicely thus drawing water through the filter from area where the most debris are present It is very quite as a plus consideration

Not silent
This power filter is not silent. The first thing I noticed once it started running was the motor noise. Also, the sections of the intake tube don't go together real securely; they feel like they will come apart if bumped. They don't snap together with plastic tabs or anything like that; they are just stuck together by kind of a built-in rubber gasket or something. I use a pre-filter over the end of the intake tube to keep out sand, and when I take off the filter to rinse it and put it back on, the sections of tubing come apart and have to be pressed back together; if they don't go together well enough, the whole thing rattles when it runs. Otherwise, the power filter is fine; I considered returning it but decided to keep it. As advertised, it does not require priming, and it seems to circulate water more powerfully than my last filter. (This one and my last one are both rated for the size of aquarium I have.) As long as I get the tubing pieces to go together well enough, it's fine, and the hassle of taking it apart and exchanging it seemed to outweigh the minor annoyances I had with it. I will probably buy a different model next time I need to replace it.
