If 120VAC is connected to the red wire while the sensor has not detected motion (ie sensor is has not made red live), will this damage the sensor?

120VAC should be connected to the black wire on the ceiling sensor. Mis-wiring may fry the unit. If you only connect the 120VAC to the red line, it won't turn the sensor. However, if the unit is wired incorrectly, there is a great chance that will fry the unit.
