A great help with bible study
An excellent help with understanding the "gist" of each book in the Bible. My only complaint is that it is infected with the "modern Catholic" issue of "we don't really know who wrote..." YES WE DO. Knock it off. 2,000 years of knowing who wrote the books and all of a sudden modern scholars magically don't know? Anyway. But aside from that: excellent!

excellent book
It is an excellent book, which reads well and is very informative but concise. Our world that we know now is based on the Bible but good vademecums are rare. This book feels the gap perfectly. This book beautifully expands the understanding and helps to appreciate the treasure that the Bible is. I bought a paper copy of this book sometime ago. My friend borrowed it and I never got it back.It did not surprise me, so I got myself an electronic copy.

Informative and easy read.
Found this a great resource for getting to grips with main themes of books in the Bible. Clear and concise in language and content. Short chapters. Not bogged down with too much detail. ideal reference source for beginners and students wanting to discover the historical background and core message of the authors. Would recommend it.

I'm sure it's a good book.
Found this book incredibly hard to read.... Only got a few pages in and was put off by the constant long fancy words which I thought it could totally do without as the book is called "you can understand the bible" honestly.... You need a degree in English to understand anything from this book .. I'm sure it's a good book.. But you do need a level of education to understand it.

Peter Kreeft

A good basic read for beginners
I have to admit that I expected a lot more of this book. I thought it would be at least twice as thick and contain in-deep-information on every book in the bible. It doesn't - and it doesn't have to ... but I stopped reading it halfway through because for me personally it was too shallow. It didn't tell me anything new - and I'm no theologist, just an ordinary church-goer. But when you're used to authors like Karl Rahner, Romano Guardini or Pope Benedict XVI. who are opening up whole new worlds behind the scripture, then this is a bit too few.BUT: If you know nothing or just very little about the bible and wouldn't read it in the first place because it's too big and scary, THEN this is the perfect shortcut to the book of books that might get you hooked! Kreeft certainly is a good read and makes it easy for you to understand difficult principles of the faith and the meaning of the bible.

Kreeft's insights are great
I like Kreeft because - like Michael Coren - he's original. Nothing phoney. I've been studying the Navarre Bible with Ernie King here in Ajax. Nothing compares with the Navarre Bible. It is the best of the best - when it comes to Bible commentaries. However, every time we study a book I open up Kreeft's commentary in this fascinating book and find it right dead on. I really like Peter Kreeft because the depth of his analysis of these books. The Bible itself can seem rather overwhelming to understand... but I think with this book -- it really fulfills it's mandate of making it less formidable. Jerome says:"Ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Christ." If you are sincere about studying the word of God -- this book is for you.

This was an excellent book. Not finished it as quiet time is needed. Overall, I found the book so far to be very enlightening. The Bible is not such a monster to me anymore. Like anything else, The More You Know, The Better it is to Understand.I would recommend this book to others wishing to understand the bible more deeply.

Very helpful book
This book really unlocks a whole new level of understanding what's really going on in the Bible. I read it after I finished reading the Bible from cover to cover over a period of six months and it really helped to understand the difficult or "darker" parts of the Bible. Currently I am also reading Scott Hahns "A Father who Keeps His Promises" and I'd recommend to read both, as they approach the subject from a different angle.

Content OK
The book is an interesting read and can also be understood by non-Catholics.But there were some annoying Format Errors in the book:"(i" is always rendered as "(1" and there were some mid-sentence line-breaks. For me it seems that the Publishers are still not taking E-Books seriously.

One of three key books for Bible study
My highest recommendation. Get this along with two other books. The Bible Compass, by Edward Sri, and Bible Basics, by John Bergsma. Read Compass and Basics before starting scripture, and this one as a companion as you go along. Scripture will open up to you in amazing ways! God Bless!

informative and Entertaining
I had bought his handbook of Christian Apologetics, 15 years ago and found it excellent. I recently came across Kreeft again in Audible books and was so impressed I went looking for more to have on Kindle (iPad). He is an American Roman Catholic and therefore unlike in other countries Kreefts emphasis remains on Jesus Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit, exclusively as the Godhead. This book is a companion to reading the Bible with all books being covered with insightful and enjoyable introductions. There are 'digs' at both Catholic and Protestant groups, and how the wrong emphasis dilutes and distracts from the Truth and Love revealed by Jesus Christ. He gives Revelation a special detailed coverage as it is the book to be so easily misinterpreted, because it is indeed both majestic and complex.

Amazing! Informative yet not overwhelming
Amazing! Informative yet not overwhelming. Love the spiritual citations for reference. Peter's tongue-in-cheek humor keeps the tone casual and entertaining. Makes reading the bible a richer experience and is really helpful in painting the bigger picture of things.

You Can Understand the Bible: A Practical and Illuminating Guide to Each Book in the Bible
This book gives great overviews of each book of the Bible. It tells, in a few pages, what the book is about, how it is relevant/significant to Salvation history, and basically why it is "in" the Bible. A Bible study which I just began selected this book to be used for opening weeks of the Bible study, and everyone has learned a lot about the Bible already (even, or maybe I should say, particularly, the leaders!). Each person reads the chapters in advance, then we discuss those lines which were significant to various members and/or those lines which someone may not have understood. Usually someone else is able to shed light on them. Of course, we try to answer each other's questions, too. I would recommend this book for personal study or Bible study groups.
