The Cretan Runner: His story of the German Occupation

Fascinating first-hand account of the Cretan Resistance
This book, written by George Psychoundakis and translated by Patrick Leigh Fermor is a gem. Psychoundakis was just 21 when the Nazis invaded Crete. He kept journals about his time as a guerilla fighter. During that time, the group of fighters, which included Cretans and Brits, became very close. Leigh Fermor became a friend, and obtained access to these journals and translated them, Leigh Fermor includes some of his own editorial notes as well as pictures of the men.We follow this mission, through caves and gorges and mountains in Crete, as these men fought against the Nazis. It’s a fascinating first-hand account of the battle. I couldn't put it down. If you love history, love Crete, add The Cretan Runner to your list.

Well done! Wish there could have been a few maps of Crete showing the various cities quoted. Great piece of history showing the bravery and resourcefulness of the Cretans and Allied forces to disrupt German operations.

Wonderful book!
.. but I am biased. I lived in Crete for many years (heaven on earth, what a stunning place Crete is!) and met the author of this book through mutual friends - just once, over lunch, but even if you've never visited Crete, the heroism of the resistance fighters in very moving and so nicely expressed by Psychoundakis. Beware though: you'll surely want to visit Crete if you read this, so have some extra cash ready!Seller delivered this a great price and in immaculate condition.

Brought the Cretan occupation and the escapades of resistance truly to life
Nice collection of recollections and stories from a lowly but important member of the resistance whose activities put both his own life and that of his family and villagers at risk. Written in a simple style that conjures up a good picture of Crete and the ever-prevailing danger that accompanied every member of the resistance and the British serviceman operational on the island.

Cretan Runner
I bought this book having read abou Psychoudakis in the biography by Artemis Cooper of Patrick Leigh Fermour. It is interesting as a historical account but the prose is full of hyperbole and pretty much unreadable in my view. I think Paddy had invested so much emotionally in this book that he overloooked its failings.
