Protects the equipment
For a lot of people, these are one of those devices that you always get, but you're never 100% sure if it's going to actually work the way you want. These may not protect you against a direct lightning strike, (I don't know that anything will), but they do apparently protect the equipment when a thunderstorm rolls through.I discovered this brand on a property that my company purchased, where they have wireless bridges connecting some of the outlying buildings on campus. There were a number of these defunct surge protectors lying around when we bought the property (they apparently never tossed them out) and their outdoor antennas were all grounded with these. I do have to replace these surge protectors occasionally after a storm, but I haven't yet had to replace the equipment they're protecting. I haven't had any just die during clear weather, so I assume the ones I have replaced must be weather related damage. The key to using these effectively is grounding them well, and using shielded cable and properly shielded RJ-45 connectors on the outdoor legs of your runs. The cable I use is Ubiquiti ToughCable Pro, which is Cat5E with foil shielding and an ESD drain wire. Be careful to avoid ground loops by grounding only on one end of the run, or by grounding both ends to the same grounding distribution block or earth ground.
