Wow, I am shocked! So I've been dealing with my gears grinding in 2nd and 3rd for the past 1 1/2 Years in my manual 2005 Scion XA the car has had the problem since before i bought it, The previous owners replaced the clutch, And I'm assuming that someone had added extra gear oil, Because it spilled out when i took off the fill cap on ramps, I've been trying to figure out the grinding, For the past 2 years doing everything but trying to put a new clutch in, Previous owners also stated that the mechanic may have put the clutch in wrong, I guess he didn't, Because this nearly completely fixed the issue in under 200 miles of driving, Driving has also become much smoother, If you have a Scion XA i suggest changing to this oil regardless if your gears are grinding! You only need exactly 2 quarts for the Scion XA no more no less, I wish all m mechanics would look this up before adding too much oil! I found this out from reading forms on the Scion XA, Everyone suggested this oil for the grinding and regardless! So i hope someone sees it here!

Changed the fluid out in my Toyota C60 transmission. Shifts smoothly with good function from the syncros.

This is an excellent product for cars with manual transmissions requiring GL-4 rated gear oil, specifically for 75W-90 weight. Putting gear oil that is GL-5 or dual rated GL-4 / GL-5 can potentially cause damage to the soft metal components inside your transmission. The high sulfer content in those gear oils can eat away the synchros inside your transmission, making shifting more difficult. This gear oil is safe, and specifically designed for use in manual transmissions. It won't eat away any of the components, and it leaves your car shifting smooth. I mistakenly put a dual rated gear oil in my wife's manual transmission. I thougt I would be safe using a GL-4 / GL-5 rated oil. I left it in there for about a year before discovering my mistake. The transmission didn't shift very well, and it was making grinding noises while driving. I eventually drained the fluid and replaced with this. Upon draining the oil, there was a lot of gold colored flecks that came out with the oil. That was material from the transmission synchros. I replaced with MT-90. The shifting improved greatly, but the transmission had already been damaged too severly. I ended up having to replace the transmission. I drained the gear oil at the time of the transmission swap. There were no gold flecks with the MT-90. The damage had all taken place prior to using the redline MT-90 gear oil. The new transmission was filled with MT-90 as well, and it has not had any issues. Pros: -one of the few available GL-4 gear oils on the market -Designed specifically for manual transmissions -reasonably priced Cons: -None (for the oil itself) -not avaialbe for sale off the shelf at most retailers (not a con of the product itself at all, especially if you are looking to buy through amazon) Like I said above, if your car's manual transmission requires GL-4 rated 75W-90 gear oil, then this oil will meet your needs and be safe for your transmission.

My 2007 Corolla 5 speed always had a “notchy” first gear engagement when coming to a stop and this was immediately gone when switching to this fluid. Keep in mind when i drained my transmission the old fluid smelled like it was at the end of its life and i have no idea which fluid was in it before as I’ve only put about 15k miles on the car in over a year and a half. Overall I’m very happy with this fluid and it seemed to make shifting overall more smooth. Would recommend

Makes my old AX-15 shift better than a new one. The synchronizers in that old transmission didn't like the standard gear oil much, but this stuff has something in it that makes them work so much better. I've never had such ease of shifting than I've had with this.

After a lot of online research, I bought this 75W90 GL4 (Red Line 50305 MT-90) gear oil back in 2020 for a 2008 Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission having worn out synchros. Just over 300,000 miles, it would grind every time it was shifted into 3rd gear, and frequently when shifted into 5th gear. When fully warmed up, one could usually avoid the 5th gear grinds and sometimes the 3rd gear grinds by shifting slowly, but this change in behavior related to temperature was rather small—as a rule, grinding shifts had become a regular and unavoidable part of this transmission's existence. It was quite easy to open the fill port and to drain the gearbox. The old fluid was brown and somewhat thick, although thankfully it didn't appear to have any chunks. This stuff was a clearish golden red and a bit thinner, and the transmission's shifting behavior improved immediately after installing this fluid. Now when cold, one could usually avoid 3rd gear grinds by shifting slowly, and 5th gear only ground if one shoved the handle quickly. Once warmed up, 5th gear wouldn't grind anymore, and 3rd gear would only grind if the driver shoved the handle quickly, although the shifter still felt a bit notchy. In cold weather, it would grind more/longer, and in hot summer weather, it barely needed to warm up at all to avoid grinding. Based on my research and this car's history, I believe that the shop that replaced the clutch back at 150k used the wrong gear oil—probably a heavy (like 85W140), generic (or GL5) gear oil that damaged the syncros over the years. For the longest time, I figured that was the best this worn transmission could do without being rebuilt. And then over the last few years, I gradually became aware that fluids have continued to improve since the specs and testing for older cars was done, and one could often upgrade to newer, thinner and more stable fluids for better performance, improved fuel economy, and extended life. I have since started running this engine on full synthetic 0W-16 oil (instead of 5W-30 conventional its specced for) and gained about 3mpg, noticeably less drag when coasting, and much easier cold winter starts in the process. Then I started wondering about the gear oil. Some people mentioned putting Synchromesh in theirs, but I wasn't comfortable going that far—it seemed overly thin and lost the important GL4 designation. I had my eye on the Redline MT-85 at the time I ordered this MT-90, but it seemed to be such a small change, I originally thought I needed thicker fluid to help with the grinding, and the reviews here on the MT-90 seemed more encouraging. Looking again recently (and after noticing how the grinding became quite temperature sensitive with the MT-90), I discovered Red Line made a seemingly perfect 70W75 GL4 (Red Line 50605 MT-LV) gear oil. Long story short, the transmission is now near 400,000 miles and hasn't ground a single time since I drained this stuff out and put that stuff in, even as we're approaching winter in Ohio and have driven it when below freezing several times already. Additionally, the shifter feels less notchy and more smooth, the car appears to have gained another 1mpg, while gear whine sounds the same as it always has. My recommendation (particularly in colder areas) would be to skip this product and just go straight for the MT-LV unless you know for sure you need the thicker oil. The Red Line MT-LV is significantly more stable, being only five points thinner than this MT-90 when hot, and matching the hot thickness of this MT-90 when cold. If your synchros are worn, you need a thinner fluid (to allow for faster displacement/grabbing), not a thicker fluid. I am sharing this here because I wish somebody had told me this several years ago and I could've saved $100 and some unneeded wear on this transmission!

Well not really, but it brought my transmission back to life on the very first drive after putting it in. I can now get back into first and have almost completely cured my crunch getting into second. All other gears are just fantastic. Is it because my transmissions gear oil just hasn't been changed in too long, or is it because this product actually is magic? I'm not sure to be honest, but I will for sure be buying the same thing again next time. Bought for 1998 Jeep TJ and have a small amount left over which is also excellent.
