## Description

Hoyt Buck's first knife, made from a worn-out file blade in 1902, was a fixed blade, and for many years, all Buck knives were fixed blades. Now, nearly one hundred years later, Buck Knives continues to offer a comprehensive line of fixed-blade knives, ideal for field and work.

Review: Grade A! - I've been collecting knives since 1971 (yikes am I that old?) and my first knife was a Buck pocket knife. Over the years I have acquired dozens of more Buck knives and I still have them all because I have never had a issue of any kind with any of them. This 692 Vanguard is called a hunting knife by Buck but I think it can be an excellent EDC as well! The fit and finish are perfection. This is a very solidly built knife. This size and blade shape are perfect for an EDC for my use. Darn good looking too! When checked with Starrett digital micrometers and calipers all the knife's measurements met factory specs. The blade on this knife is .15" thick 420hc stainless steel. If you do your research you'll find that 420hc is widely used not only in knives but for other uses as well. Leatherman uses it extensively in their multi-tools. 420hc is renowned for its toughness and corrosion resistance. A gentleman at Buck found a way to consistently get the maximum hardness out of 420hc, 58 HRC. So you can expect good edge retention. 420hc is easy to sharpen as well. This knife was razor sharp right out of the box, requiring no sharpening before testing. I love the handle on this knife. The shape, grippy texture, and large brass hand guard give you confidence your hand won't slip even if is wet or greasy. Being very familiar with the steel I went into testing knowing I would not damage the knife and that any dulling caused would be easy to resharpen. The blade performed as expected and hardness tested at 58 HRC, also as expected. The supplied nylon sheath is a bit taco shaped but holds the knife snuggly. Nylon sheaths are my least favorite and I had a spare OEM leather one so I'll be using that. The wood handle Vanguard comes with a leather sheath, why doesn't this model? Again, there is nothing wrong with the nylon sheath, just my preference. Just a week or two ago I was practically drooling about the Kershaw Pack Mule saying it was my new favorite EDC, but this Buck Vanguard might just dethrone it already! Old guy seal of approval on the Buck 692 Vanguard!! A glitch in the desertcart app won't let me write a separate review for the 192 Vanguard. Same knife, just a different handle. Love them both!!!
Review: RAZOR SHARP!!!!!! - Outstanding craftsmanship. The brass is great looking. This rubbery grip handle is comfortable in the hand and doesn’t slip. This blade came razor sharp from Buck. This opens up deer like a zipper and makes gutting a quick and easier job. Great job Buck Knives. This isn’t my first Buck Knife and it won’t be my last. Lifetime warranty. Made in America 🇺🇸. 🦌

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it made in the usa or china?**
A: USA

**Q: would you reccomend this knofe for skinning and gutting deer?**
A: If you've never owned a Buck knife let me tell you, they hold an edge like no other knife you've ever had. The workmanship on this knife is of a superior quality and it is an extremely good looking piece of equipment, so much so that I was hesitant about even getting it dirty let alone gut and skin a deer. That being said, I bought this knife for the express purpose of using it on North American big game. Between the 8 guys I hunt with we managed to bag 3 deer and a bear. I assisted in gutting two of the deer. The only thing I miss is not having a small lanyard to keep the knife attached to your wrist. Not only did we gut and skin the deer but we used it to butcher the deer as well. It has a hefty enough blade to separate joints without the fear of bending or snapping the blade. Yeah, I got it dirty. A little soap an water and it's like new. I did a little honing on the blade about a month ago and you can shave hair off your arm. Along with my Ruger #1 this is one of the better investments I made for hunting.

**Q: What part of the product is "know by the state of California to contain a substance that causes cancer'"? This is a warning on the side of the box.**
A: The state of California is insane. They put this warning on absolutely everything, including a warning to "wash hands after handling." It means nothing.

**Q: Is this USA made because it says origin is china**
A: Most Buck Knives are made in the Idaho, USA. A few are made in China. The USA made knives have the Paul Bos heat treatment, which makes a world of difference in the quality of the blade - even if the steel is the same. The Vanguard 192 is made in the USA.

I've heard numerous people barf out the rumor "Most Buck Knives are made in China." That is not true. Those who say it are either uniformed or lying. Buck makes high quality knives right here in the United States of America.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sometimes you *can* improve on perfection.
*by G***R on June 13, 2017*

Let me start off by admitting - I'm a "knife guy..." I've been fascinated by and collecting knives of various sorts since my parents bought me my first Cub Scout pocketknife at age 8. I own 50+ knives of differing types, and make it a point to always carry a pocketknife with me (as a gentleman should...) That being said, this knife's place in my collection is one of high esteem, and it has quickly become my "go-to" blade for any and all ventures in the outdoors. Out of the box, the beauty of the knife is truly something to behold. Then combination of the wood handle and highly polished brass hardware make for a classic aesthetic, but the slimmer, more ergonomic design of this knife and its shape (as opposed to "traditional" hunting knives like the Buck 119 or Case 365-5) offers a more modern "solution" to the hunting knife design problem. The weight and balance of the knife make it comfortable to both wear on the belt and to use for prolonged periods of time (such as when skinning and butchering an animal.) It is also worth noting that the smaller overall size of this knife as compared to many of its more "traditional" brethren means that it is more comfortable to carry on the belt, and is much less prone to interfering with leg movement or providing the unexpected "handle jab" in the ribs when strenuously climbing or hiking. Yet despite its smaller size, this knife is MORE than capable of taking on the task of skinning and dressing even the largest game - with its design and balance lending itself especially well to smaller detail work when needed. The Vanguard came respectably sharp right out of the box, but after a handful of passes on the stone, this blade is ready for surgery - and the steel holds an edge incredibly well, as is the case with all Buck knives. I have used this knife for a variety of tasks - from cutting rope and making fuzz sticks to dressing ducks, rabbits, geese, and more than a dozen deer. It has always performed each task incredibly well, and has never failed to come back for more - giving all that I ask of it and more. The Vanguard has quickly become my favorite, my "go-to," and my most trusted companion when heading out to breathe in the beauty, majesty, and raw power of the great outdoors. I've been a Buck fan for years - as have many before me - and I've heard it said by some that the Buck 119 and Folding Hunter represent "perfection" in their design. While these two iconic knives truly set the benchmark against which all other hunting knives should be measured - trust me when I say that the Buck Vanguard shows that you really CAN improve on "perfection." Five stars without question or hesitation.
