Product Description Debut album from Paolo Nutini. desertcart.com 19-year old Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini sounds older than his years on his debut album, These Streets. It's not just his careworn, smooth-as-sandpaper voice, either (although, admittedly, it does help). It's more to do with the maturity of the lyrics, and the casual soulfulness of his delivery. "Last Request" is more the work of a vintage Motown singer than a teenager from Paisley, and it's to Nutini's credit that he carries it off with aplomb. And rather like the soul singers of previous generations, he manages to sing without a hint of hypocrisy about his own sexual exploits ("Jenny Don't Be Hasty") while also questioning his girlfriend's fidelity ("Alloway Grove"). It's the fact that he's so frank, and even a little bit naive, that he manages to get away with it. And though the stripped-down tunes on These Streets don't always immediately grab the listener (the title track, in particular), the songs where Nutini is accompanied by a full band often manage to evoke sunny-day American soul ("New Shoes", for example). This is a strong debut, and considering Paolo Nutini's tender years, bigger things can be expected of him in the future. --Ted Kord Review: Best Album In Decades - Bought this album for wife's birthday in early February and have since listned to it at least 50 times. My wife has probably listened to it 500 times by now. We just love it. To me the appeal lies partly in Nutini's vocal qualities (reminiscent of Paul McCartney), partly on the intelligence of the lyrics (clever rhymes and unusual word choices), and partly the authoritative, graceful arrangements. Each song is a finished work, a burnished gem, not some work-in-progress thrown in to fill space. Thematically, the songs as a group convey the youthful joy in love and sex, innocence and sincerity, compassion and optimism--much like the best of that golden era of 1967-1973 when most of the really good rock-pop-r&b was being played on the then-new FM stations. Stylistically, I'm hearing The Beatles, Michael Bolton/Otis Redding, and maybe a little of Van Morrison. In short, it's highly original yet warmly familiar. My favorite tracks are Last Request, These Streets and Millions, but there's not a lemmon in the bunch. I haven't been able to repeatedly listen to an album without getting good and sick of a few of the songs since about 1973. That's why I say it's the best album in decades. My wife and I are looking forward to the next one. I hope his touring schedule isn't making it too difficult to write. If it takes him a while, it will be worth the wait. Review: Simply tremendous album - I found out about Paolo on the web by sheer accident on YouTube. What an amazing soulful and mature voice he has, even at 19 (now 20). Other than Amos Lee and Martin Sexton and Stereophonics, I've not come across an artist recently whose lyrics and command of his voice is so perfect. Paolo knows just what his scottish accent works best on. I am distantly reminded of a young Rod Stewart, in the time of the Faces, way before he went mainstream pop and disco, and when he was a wee rocking lad. Saw him live in Seattle, frankly, his live stuff is way better (as good as this album is!!!). See the live stuff he's done on YouTube (the stuff his crew has released, not the cell phone concert tapings of 15 year olds) and you have to agree that Paolo is the best thing to come out of Scotland in years. Hint, the last track (Alloway Groove) is actually three songs, separated by about a minute or three of silence. At about 12:00 min into the song and after a few minutes of silence, suddenly you hear Paolo do an acoustic version of Last Request. Amazing.....

Phenomenal Talent
My purchase of this CD from Amazon was an example of outstandingly good fate, since I bought it as a package recommendation on a whim without listening to any of it. Paolo Nutini impresses me as an exceptionally gifted young musician. It's hard to describe what makes him uniquely absorbing. He has a great voice, writes interesting songs, and all. But there is something more to me. He conveys to me a genuine love for making music and for whom much comes quite naturally. Some of his songs have great lyrics, but are really short on verses. He pulls it off by resinging the same lines but transforming them with the accent, tempo, or melody. I have not yet seen him perform, but know and have heard from those who have, that he is phenomenal. What I do know from experience is my "favorite" song on the album keeps changing, always a great sign to me.

Inspiring, Meaningful Folk Rock
The one thing that I really like about this CD is the lyrics; They are unconventional and winding; They touch on subjects you didn't expect to hear, and often evoke emotions from inside you didn't think a song could bring out. Coupled with the passion in his voice and some truly great melodies, this guy is someone to watch. Reminds me a little of Cat Stevens at times, but he is a true original for sure. A unique voice w/something to say.

Truly Sensational!!!
If your not in on watching this guy rise to the top...your totally missing out. He's got the universal influence of sound, touching your soul while fondling with styles to the likes of Elvis, John Lennon, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye (just to name a few) yet distinguishing himself in his own way and he's still SOOO young which really puts the icing on the cake. Buy the cd...and the others (I recommend Sunndy Side Up as I have that one as well) to support him and really study his music. It's phenomenal. You won't be disappointed. End of story. :-) MY HOPES ARE HIGH BUT MY EYES CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY SEE. OH, GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BELIEVE...GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BELIEVE.

Nutini is The Real Deal!
Paolo Nutini is the real deal! If you are wavering on if you should buy it, buy it! This is the best musician to come out in the past 15 years. His voice is amazing and he uses it to the max. The song writing is old school yet original at the same time. Each song is different yet very good. If your like me where you buy a C.D. and wind up only liking one or two songs, buy this C.D. Every song on here is very good, fresh and original. I also suggest buying his second C.D. "Sunny Side Up" It is the next step from this one and is very good as well.

At Risk Of Repeating Other Reviews!!.........I Will Simply Say That There Is No Need To Skip Any Tracks On This STUNNING Debut Album By an Exceptionally Gifted and Talented Young Man. Right From Track 1 "Jenny Dont Be Hasty" You Will Be Hooked, He may Be Only 20 Years Old Now, But You Wouldnt Believe It With His Soulful Voice, And The Lyrics That Much Older Artists Would be Very Envious Of. Track 2 "Last Request" Will Surely Bring Tears to your Eyes, "Rewind" Is a Beautiful Soaring Ballad, And "Million Faces" Simply Pulls at The Heartstrings, "These Streets" Is An Uplifting Little Dittie!! And Then The Bluesy "New Shoes" Which Is So Catchy Its a Foot Tapper. "White Lies" We Return To The Ballads ( And What Ballads We have Here ) "Loving You" Another Piece Of Genius, "Autumn" Is Probably The Simpliest Song On The Album, Sparse in Production, Then To Finish Off We Have "Alloway Grove" an Umptempo Song Until The Last 2 Minutes Of it. We Think Thats The End!!!!!!.......................But There"s a Hidden Track!!!...............An Accoustic Version Of "Last Request" Which Really IS Stunning, And The Most Moving Moment On The Album, This Version Really Does Suit The Song, and I Prefer This Version to The Earlier Version On The Record. This Guy Is Going To Be HUGE In The Years To Come Make No Mistake About That, To Think He Is Only 20 Now Is Frightening!!!!........More Albums Like This And He Will be An Absolutle GENIUS Before He is 25 This Is a MUST HAVE Album, I Have Played it Over And Over Again Since Getting It, You HAVE To Add This To Your Collection, If You Dont, You Will Be Foolish.
