Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness: A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Bedwetting - Second Edition

Best Dry Night Book Ever
This book is excellent. It contains useful, practical, easy to use tips on keeping your older child dry at night. I totally recommend this book to any family struggling with this issue.I have read everything I could find on this subject in the last two years and this book still provided some new information (eg double voiding ... which really helps). This is also the first time I have read of a technique for using a star chart that will actually encourage a child that is hardly ever dry.The only things I would add is that (1) you can now get cheap bedwetting alarms on eBay that clip to the clothes and work very well ($10 including postage), (2) we found using our alarm with a pull up worked best (put on underwear, then place alarm sensor on the outside of the underwear, then put a pullup right on top). We could still tell whether it was a small, medium or large wet (and yay! when it was totally dry), but it meant that all we had to wash was the underwear (not the sheets every day). This is more expensive though, because you have to buy pull-ups. But for our child (who has Aspergers) it avoided the night time upset that would come with wet sheets.

Very Helpful **To Be Used With A Bedwetting Alarm**
This book is designed to be used in conjuction with a bedwetting alarm. This was exactly what I was looking for. My son is 6 years old and had never had a dry night. I had read the reviews of the Malem Bedwetting Alarm and knew we had to try it. I just wasn't sure how to go about it. I had been using the Malem alarm for a few days and was discouraged that it wasn't waking my child up and thought it wasn't going to work for us. Then I purchased this book and it explained so much. Specifically, that your child will need help waking to the alarm but that his body is still learning from the alarm. Anyhow, it took about 4 (long) weeks where I felt like I had a newborn again but it was so worth it! He no longer wets the bed. It's been 5 weeks now of consistently dry nights!!! If you plan on using the alarm, I highly suggest you get this book. It really helps explain how it should be used and how it's working.

very helpful book
I knew that I wanted to use a bedwetting alarm with my 6-year-old, and I had talked to a friend who'd had success with one, so with a bit of advice from her I thought I could get by without buying the book. After a couple of weeks with the alarm on its own, I changed my mind and I'm glad I did. While I agree with other readers that the book is very brief and could probably be a pamphlet, I found it to be very useful and reassuring. I especially liked the first chapter, which discussed the issue of bedwetting in general and provided some insight into possible causes and information about treatment options like medications. The other best part was information about a reward plan for my son (including printable pages for notes), which I was struggling with. I felt weird rewarding him (or not rewarding him on wet mornings) when I fully believed that he couldn't control it at all. I knew that just wanting a reward wasn't going to retrain his body, so the book helped by providing a suggestion for compliance rewards along the way and information about how we can deem him done with training as well as how long we might expect it all to take. It was worth the price for the confidence it provided in the process.

The best!!
Love this book. I wish I had read it before. It is an excellent investment. It has a clear language and you do not get bored reading it. It really helps you understand everything about children who keep wetting the bed. Super recommended

We found this book helpful.
We did the whole alarm thing when my son was seven, and it seemed to work great. However, six months later he was back to full wetting every night. I got this book before trying again. Looks like we did everything right except step 7. Five months in to the second try to eliminate nighttime wetting with the alarm (he's now age nine), he'll go a couple weeks without wetting but then have a couple nights where the alarm will go off (but the spot on the bed is very small if it even gets that far.) The book made the "end game" more clear. We quit too early before, and that led to a relapse. I'm hoping that this time, following the last step properly will lead to a permanent solution.

Not helpful for me
Sadly, this book was not helpful to me at all. I was hoping that there would be some practical advice other than "buy an alarm." Out of the three steps, step four is choose an alarm, five is prepare to use the alarm, and six is use the alarm. Not kidding. The book should just be a flyer called "Buy an Alarm." Waste of money. This one will be headed to the used book shop.

Effective guide, realistic expectations.
Fantastic resource. Used along with wetness alarm (Wet-Stop3 Bedwetting Enuresis Alarm with Loud Sound and Strong Vibration) with 7 1/2 yo boy with ASD for 6 weeks. Had one dry night in week 3, then started dry nights every night in week 4. Boy is very happy with himself and says "I love my alarm". Has been dry for over a month now without alarm.

Good to buy in conjunction with bedwetting alarm
Bought this book with the Wet-Stop3 alarm. Book was helpful, provided me with some information that I didn't see in my web searches on the topic. I found the book useful in preparing to use the alarm, had more information about why/how the alarm works than the instructions that came with alarm itself. With the alarm my 8 yo son stopped bed-wetting in about 2 weeks and I think some of the advice/info in this book was helpful to make that happen.

Excellent, reassuring book for parents
Easy to read and understand, full of helpful hints, tips and factual information to help parents understand the reasons behind night time wetting issues. Written sympathetically by a health care professional with a lot of experience which comes through clearly in her writing, based on the information in the book we have chosen to start using a bed wetting alarm for our 5 1/2 yr old son. We are nearly 2 weeks in and have had three entirely dry nights, having NEVER had any dry nights previously. We would have not even got this far without this book. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend! Changed our life!
We have used an alarm for 3 months without much luck. After burying this book things started to improve very quickly. Our 8 year old has now been dry for 3 months! We are so happy!!!This book has a lot of examples of mistakes people make and also really effective charts for children to fill in.
