What do you have to do to clean/replace material on the inside? Better than the cleaner that sits on the back of the aquarium?

Absolutely. My last flu Val lasted 15 years. Replacement if inside baskets is 6minths to a year

Does this come with hoses and everything. I know it has media but wo dering on hoses

yes, the unit comes with all you need to set it up. I found that for my use, I needed to by more bio media, but it has everything you need to get it up and running.

Does this filter allow for plants to flourish or is it too powerful?

I have a number of plants in my 75g aquarium and have had no issues. The outflow from the 407 canister filter creates nice movement of the Cryptocoryne Undulata. If necessary, you can adjust the flow, although this does reduce the amount of gallons filtered per hour.
