11 by 14-Inch Ultrasmooth Stretched Canvas

I stopped painting portraits quite a few years ago. When I was recently commissioned for a portrait I tried to find portrait canvas and finally settled for something other than Fredrix. I was so disappointed, it was so rough. So when I was commissioned to do another portrait I couldn't find the Fredrix labeled portrait canvas like I use to get so I took a chance on the ultra smooth. It wasn't quite as smooth as I wanted but the best canvas I've been able to find. There were no bumps on the canvas and it was pulled tight. I did add another layer of gesso for a bit of added smoothness. It's nice to paint on and I will order it again, it's the best I've found.

Very nice quality!Usually I work with medium smooth Daler-Rowney canvases (red label “Artist's Stretched Canvas”) and you can see on my pictures (bigger canvas) looks smoother. Due to coronavirus it’s out of stock so I was looking for a good alternative. I was hoping Fredrix ultrasmooth will be the same, but it is more textured and a bit thinner. Anyway I’m happy with my purchase. Arrived safe and clean! Can’t wait to paint.

Not really portrait grade smooth... Pretty average canvas to be honest. If I knew the canvas surface was this rough I wouldn't have purchased it. Wooden frame rather cheap.

Another artist recommended the Fredrix brand canvases for portrait art, saying that it had a smoother texture. I compared it to a canvas from Michael’s when it arrived, and the texture is exactly the same. Also, it has a standard stapled back, like the level one canvas at Michael’s, yet it cost the level 2 price. Finally, it arrived damaged, as you can see in the photos. The plastic wrap was torn on the back and worn off on the corners. As a result, the corners were dirty and worn / frayed. I can’t charge clients good money for a beat up canvas. I really wanted to like this, but I returned it.

This brand of stretched canvas is great. Very smooth and tight. I paint with acrylics and this canvas is great for detailed work as it is super smooth.
