Of all the legendary singer-songwriters who emerged in the 1960s, few loom as large, or carry as much mystique, as Leonard Cohen. His vivid, haunting compositions showcase a unique voice, and his singular body of work has exercised a massive influence over multiple generations of artists. The Montreal-born Cohen was already established as a respected poet and novelist when he turned his creative attention towards songwriting. After being signed to Columbia Records by fabled A&R man John Hammond, his debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen became an instant classic upon its release in late 1967, thanks to such startlingly original songs as "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy" and "So Long, Marianne." The subsequent Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate sealed his status as an artist to be reckoned with. Cohen continued to conquer new territory with such '70s releases as New Skin for the Old Ceremony, Recent Songs and his controversial 1977 collaboration with Phil Spector, Death of a Ladies' Man, followed by such adventurous works as Various Positions, I'm Your Man and the apocalyptic The Future. More recent releases like Ten New Songs and Dear Heather demonstrate that Cohen continues to make music that's as challenging as anything in his catalog. Meanwhile, the six live albums that he has released over the years—Live Songs, Cohen Live, Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979, Live in London, Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 and Songs from the Road—find the artist revisiting, and often drastically reworking, his remarkable compositions. GREAT but not complete...and that price??!!??
Great stuff, classic stuff, but not complete...and being that 3 of the live records in this box do not include the DVD counterparts is a dealbreaker...at least there is a box available with just the 11 studio albums ("The Complete Studio Albums Collection") at a MUCH lower price, and you can buy the live records with the DVD parts separately from this set. "Live In London" was sold initially as a 2CD/1DVD (or Blu-Ray) set, "Live From The Isle Of Wight 1970" had a DVD or BluRay disc (your choice) and so did "Songs From The Road". This box does not have the video counterparts, just audio. PLUS, there were 2 further live records released afterwards..."Live In Dublin" from 2014 as a 3CD/1DVD or BluRay and "Can't Forget: A Souvenir Of The Grand Tour" from 2015...as well as his final 3 studio albums..."Old Ideas" (2012), "Popular Problems" (2014) and his swan song, "You Want It Darker" (2016). Basically, if this was the only set of the 2 boxes made available, at a lower price, I'd say buy it...but being the CHOICE is available, and it's just the first 11 studio albums remastered, at a fraction of the price AND space (no jewelcases, just nice thin cardboard wallets with the white border around each album...I like it, not everyone does), and nice booklet...go for it, and just in case a full complete set comes out in the future...that usually happens after a revered figure like Leonard passes on...and you want to replace it with the new one...you won't be at a financial loss...you can sell it and get your money back...this set?? Not so much...but all his records are great. RIP Leonard Cohen the master.
