Love these things and they write so smooth

This is a full on Gel refill for a conventional ball point pen body. Gel, while possibly not as universal as a ballpoint (oil ink) pen, does write with less pressure and if you're writing notes, less hand fatigue. The gel writes with little pressure and works great on common paper. This is however water based and if the writing surface comes in contact with water (writing in the rain), the ink will bleed. This specific model is a fine point which probably works as well as something like a Uniball. Replacing a refill like this is probably more environmentally correct than replacing a whole pen, while just refilling the ink in a fountain pen may be the ultimate. If you're really a pen nerd, you may choose to keep a ballpoint refill around for occasions that require that and use the Gel otherwise. Pencils, on the other hand, are a whole different topic.

Easy to see with my aging eyes. The Parker gel writes darker than a Uniball Jetstream 101 Rollerball, but slightly less smooth. The Uni 101 writes darker and smoother than a Fisher ballpoint. The Fisher writes slightly darker than the new Parker Quinkflow ballpoint, but just as smooth. If you like to write up at an angle while reclining, get a Fisher Space Pen refill, which writes on anything at any angle. But it's not as dark or as bold as the Parker gel. The Parker gel will start to skip and get weak while writing horizontal or upward. I have the Parker Gel refill in my Parker Jotter and and Parker IM ballpoint pens. It does not smear and is very easy to read. I prefer the Parker gel to the Quinkflow ballpoint since it requires less writing pressure to make a dark bold line, which allows me to write faster. I don't know how long it will last yet. Gel pens are not known for having a long life. But the Parker gel does it's job well.

I've seen a lot of bad reviews about these refills, so I figured I would chime in. Yes, they are not like the original ballpoint pens. However, I switched to these because they work significantly better on lower quality paper (my hand would tire very easily with regular ball points). It takes a different lighter stroke and angle to write with these, but I don't think it is too difficult to adjust. I've had several packs of these now and have experiences no issues like I've seen in a lot of these inflammatory comments. The only thing negative I can say about these is that they run out pretty fast (about a month or two with constant use). This is of course due to the thick gel ink tip (a little to thick for my taste, but they are very smooth to write with).

WHEN these work properly, they're great. I have gone through about 8 of these gel refills so far in my favorite pen, and they write well, usually. Out of 8, one or two didn't work correctly out of the box, about four worked properly for a few months at least, and today, one leaked out the entire contents of ink all over my pants pocket. Pros: They write very well when functioning properly. Nice deep black gel ink, dries somewhat quickly. Cons: Not very reliable, I give them about a 50% reliability rating. Don't last long. I don't write much, and these run out (or stop working) relatively quickly. __________________________________ Update 11/30/2015: I just received another order of these, and each one failed catastrophically the very first day of use. These ruined two nearly new pairs of shorts in two days flat, for a total of three pairs of shorts ruined including the previous episode a few months back. I am lowering my previous 3 star rating to 1 star. I will never order these again.

For me, these refills are just right. Not too thick or thin. Ink flows well. Be aware that the ink keeps flowing right to the last few words and then dies quickly. That is a compliment to the way the ink flows, but it could catch one unaware! This is my 3rd set with this company. I always buy a new set when I start the 2nd refill. It is hard to judge longevity objectively because people write different amounts. I have it at my home office desk and each refill lasts me several months with my limited paper-writing tasks.
