Since the blade only moves in one cutting direction, the bands last much longer and cut much faster than the sabre saw. My only complaint: The only way to really make one of these portable band saws shine is to get a table/stand/rig. That will allow you to use it like a regular metal/wood/plastic stand-up bandsaw. DeWalt does not offer/make such a "thing." To get that functionality, you have to get a 3rd-party extra. The Swag table looks good, but only gets you "standard" band saw functionality. The Portaband pro rig gets you both table and chop-saw functionality. You'll have to decide how you plan to use the saw to determine which table you "need" (if you need one at all). Just swap it and get back to mangling metal. *the only small thing that I do not totally love is the stock blade, but, lets face it - dewalt makes great tools and crap blades. I've replaced every dewalt blade I own right off the bat and been super happy. This will cut your pipe easy. **Q: Is there any provision for mounting this saw to a stand to cut stock the way I would with an abrasive cut-off saw?** A: Check out Portaband Pro, they make a stand that converts this model to a vertical band saw or a chop saw **Q: what is the hex key for?** A: I never needed the hex key to use the saw,but decided to check it out. The key is for the material support bracket. The bracket is so the material can rest against it while you cut giving you better stability. For an aftermarket bandsaw stand, this plate would have to be removed to substitute a bigger plate. I've cust bars, flats, 'C'-channels, etc. that way. I had used a 'porta-band' many years ago to cut conduit but that was a long time ago (faded memories). I looked all over the place (many sites) before buying this saw. I consider a few on my 'short list'. I looked at several video reviews. My wife told me to get this one. My biggest reservation was that bad luck that I've had with a DeWalt planer (735) that I have. It has been a lemon from day-1. But finally she prevailed and I went for this one. I do not have another one to compare it against but at this point I don't care because this one works fine. I can cut very straight and clean lines (pencil thin) with ease and quickly and portably! I like it ! I just hope it stays working as nice as it has up until now. I've only cut angle-iron so far (2.5 x 2.5 x 3/8 is the largest)(with original blade).
