Great Guide
This guide is great for someone trying to learn and play the sounds of jazz piano since the 1960s, with it's rootless chords, modal, and other voicings used by the greats since then, with examples. Very helpful if you are trying to get past the thin sound of traditional chords played in the normal inversions. It's helpful if you are trying to learn by yourself, without a great teacher to show you the way. Or it might be a good source of topics for discussion and development with a teacher or mentor if you have one. The book explains things in a more systematic and easy to understand way than some of the "bibles," like Mark Levine's "The Jazz Piano Book". Levine's book has it's place too, but you better be pretty deep in knowledge and site reading skills before you try to learn or understand some of the stuff in that one. Perhaps a combination of Valero's "Post Bob Jazz Piano" and Levine's book, as well as Phil DeGregg's "Jazz Keyboard Harmony" will teach or answer about any question you have about jazz piano since 1960 or so. Valero's book easily cleared up issues that confused me before. Well worth the price and then some!

Great book--a keeper among jazz piano books.
I own dozens of jazz piano books, and some are terrible, others are great. John Valerio has written similar books for Stride and Swing Piano, and Bop Piano. I do not like the Bop Piano book as much, perhaps because I am not as much a fan of bop. This book covers Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, and many others. Of course, you can only get a flavor of the style of each, as it might take 100s of pages to fully explore each of and their styles, as they have developed over time. However, I must add, that this is really a bargain at the price that is listed and is worth 30 to 40 dollars. Fortunately or unfortunately jazz learning books are based on the number of pages and not the quality. This is a five-start jazz book. And, no, I have no connection with the author whatsoever.

Fairly advanced level
I have the Bebop Jazz Piano and Blues Piano books in this series and they are fine for intermediate level, but this volume is more advanced. The first chapter preview is easy enough, but it advances quickly. What you don't see is Valerio's tunes that are supposed to help you play like Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. Once you get to the actual stylistic techniques and the tunes, it's beyond intermediate in my opinion. I've seen arrangements in jazz anthologies that are easier of Chick's tunes. This book might be discouraging to the early to middle-intermediate player, but if you've been playing jazz for several years it's probably fine.

something new
As a jazz enthusiast, this book was something new that went beyond all other jazz teaching books that I have come across. It has given me a new outlook on the jazz of the 1950's. Left-hand voicings, two-hand voicings, scales, tonality, modality are just some of the main ideas that this book goes through. One thing that really caught my eye, is the in depth look at the impression Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett use in their music. The book is a great option for those looking to expand their jazz knowledge and incorporate their own style. The book moves quickly but provides the information that is important for those of us looking to play. It comes with a very handy CD which allows to hear what it's supposed to sound like. I highly recommend this book.

Direct to the point !!!
This book is one of my favorites . It goes direct to the point and show you the " tricks" of the greatest modern jazz pianists. Pentatonics , quartal voicings , licks , theory , harmony and beyond... All the tools you need to get the modern sound and incorporate to your playing. Highly recomended !! including classical pianists .
