Could a bright 6 year old (enjoys monopoly, chess, carcasonne) pick this up? thanks

This is a beautiful game and the 6 year old would learn a lot about birds and their habitats. It all depends on if they have a love for nature and birds whether they would pick it up easily enough.. I would suggest an adult play with them who knows a bit about the game and a love for animals first. I don't see why they couldn't pick it up. After all they can play chess so this should be easy for them to play and enjoy while learning too.

Is this the new edition with the introductory starter pack?

Yes it is. It even has a prepped little starter pack of cards for convenience while playing the first couple rounds to familiarise yourself. Outstanding thing all in all, we just tried it with a couple friends not long ago.
