Review: Lodge Essential Enamel Cast Iron Dutch Oven, 6 Quart, Indigo - I am extremely happy with my Lodge Essential Enamel Cast Iron Dutch Oven. The quality exceeded my expectations, especially for the price. It feels sturdy, well-made, and the enamel finish is beautiful. I've used it for making soups, stews, and homemade sourdough bread, and it distributes heat evenly and cooks everything perfectly. It is also easy to clean which is a huge plus. The size is perfect for family meals, and the Dutch oven looks great both in the kitchen and on the dining table. It performs just as well as much more expensive brands, making it an excellent value. Overall, this was a great purchase, and I couldn't be happier with it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality Dutch oven.
Review: Great Dutch Oven at a really great price. - I purchased the Lodge 6 qt. enameled dutch oven in Island Spice Red. I bought it to replace a cheaper enameled dutch oven that I had received as a gift and which had discolored almost immediately when used. So far this dutch oven has not discolored - and I have used it almost 2 dozen times to make things such as soup, stews, tomato sauce and several pot roasts. I let the pot cool down and then hand wash it in hot soapy water, using only a nylon scrub brush or synthetic scouring pad to remove any of the stubborn areas. So far it looks just as it did when I took it out of the box. I usually use only wooden utensils when cooking in it as I know metal could scratch the surface - and I am sure over time scratches would lead to discoloration. As for the size....the 6 qt. is perfect for my needs. I have done meals for 4 or 5 people and it has always been ample enough to handle the job. When I make pot roast I usually do a 4 lb roast and it handles that plus the carrots and onions and potatoes just fine. Cooking it at a long slow braise (275 for 4 hours or so) everything comes out perfectly. As for clean-up, when I cooked my first pot roast, I opened the lid and it was heavily coated with caramelized cooking juices and quite darkly stained. I thought this was going to be the beginning of a long, intense scrubbing and cleaning session that would result in discoloration of the inside of the lid. After letting it cool, and using just a nylon scrub brush with plenty of soap and very minimal effort, it was completely clean and like new! I had also read reviews that were negative regarding the way the lid was manufactured, thus producing a gap between the pot and the lid, allowing for excess evaporation - which would be a problem with long slow braising in the oven. Later reviews said that this seemed to be fixed in newer product and I was very happy to see that it was no longer an issue. The seal is secure between the pot and the lid. I would recommend taking care when using it, as with any enamel ware, and use only wooden or silicon utensils whenever possible. Also, as the insert recommended, remember to lift the pot and not drag it across oven racks and burners (this requires some muscle when the pot is full) - so as not to scratch it. It has already become an invaluable piece of cookware in my kitchen, and with the proper care I am hopeful that it will remain as such. As for the being made in China and concerns about lead...I did quite a bit of research regarding the lead in cookware coming out of China and feel confident that Lodge is closely monitoring its production to insure the safety of its cookware. While I do wish it was not made in China, it is one of the main reasons it is not well over $200 dollars like other top brands and is the main reason I could afford it. If I am ever able to find a Le Creuset outlet where I can buy just such an item at a reasonable cost I would definitely do so - but for now I am very happy with my purchase of the Lodge Dutch Oven.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it made in the USA**
A: Yes, they are made overseas, not in the USA. I've had my pan for 7 years now...and it's used weekly, and more often in the winter months. I was a bit disappointed when it came and I realized it wasn't made in the USA but decided to give it a chance. After 7 years of hard use I can honestly say it's the best pot I have ever owned! It's discolored a bit, not surprising with the amount of use it gets and all the soups stews and roasts I make in it throughout each year. But that hasn't affected the pot at all. It is just a good as it was when I first bought it. I'm going to try the 1 cup baking soda and 4 cups water trick (boil 5 min let sit with the lid on for 2 hours) that I read about in one of the other questions to see if it will return to it's original beige coloring, but even if it doesn't, it's still going to be my "go to" pot for everything I can use a dutch oven for :-) I highly recommend this pot, even though it's not made in the USA!

**Q: Flat bottom suitable for glass top range?????**
A: It's too heavy and will scratch it. It's a shame that glass top ranges even exist. They don't conduct heat well, hold on to heat far too long after it is turned off, and of course, you need perfectly flat cookware which is usually the crappy teflon stuff rather than cast iron and stainless. The only advantage of them is that they are really easy to clean.

**Q: One person mentioned that you shouldn't heat when empty, but I want to bake bread, and it needs to be hot first. Will this damage it?**
A: Apparently artisan bread bakers are heating it empty without problem, but Lodge says fill it halfway with water, preheat, then dump the water out before baking - I don't know it that works for all, but it gets it to 212F (100C) and if you need a higher temp, perhaps do that first then dump the water out to minimize the time it's been empty before it reaches your temp.Google/search "lodge dutch oven bake bread" and look for the link to "Baking Bread in a Dutch Oven" at the artisanbreadinfive site. The points I mention above are in the comments.

**Q: Is this seasoned?**
A: The interior of the pot is ceramic. It's not possible to season it. Seasoning is only for cast iron that is not covered with ceramic. The only thing you must pay attention to is: wash it well. And don't chip it --- which is not easily done. OK?

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect for Sourdough
*by B***R on July 30, 2026*

I bought this Dutch oven because I wanted to start making sourdough, and since I’d never owned one before, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money. I’m so glad I went with this one. It’s super sturdy, feels really well made, and has worked perfectly for every loaf I’ve baked so far. It’s also easy to clean, which I wasn’t expecting with something this heavy. The only thing I’d mention is that the color is a little more gray in person than it looked online, but I still really like it. For the price, I honestly don’t think you can beat it. It fits perfectly in my oven, and the quality is way better than I expected. I’d definitely buy it again, and I already know this is going to be one of my go-to gifts for friends or family who want to get into sourdough.
