I've read about other floating platforms sinking into the water when a large turtle gets on top. Have you seen that as an issue?

Some do and some don't. I've had several different types and this one is the only one that our red eared slider has not destroyed. When my turtle gets on this platforms it sinks to some degree but not to bad. Just have to make sure all parts are put together really well or they can get the pieces off. This is the best one that I've ever had.

would this fit in a 90 gallon tank?

yes, i have a 100 gallon tank that it fits in quite nicely, the only problem is that you cant have the water level above the top of the platform which is 2ish feet. so if you have a 4 foot tall aquarium, it could only be half full
