Seems pretty sturdy for the price. Remember, the diameter of the circles you can make depends on the length of the pencil or other marker you insert and how much of it you extend. The full 12" diameter CAN be achieved, but it ain't easy.

I bought a set of 30 compasses and protractors. The protractors are very high quality. I teach in a public school and like the metal compasses better than the plastic ones. After using the compasses for a week with 100 students, five of them are no longer functional. One "fell" completely apart (no doubt helped along by a student) and four others became too loose. Overall, the compasses worked very well. At this price, I will reorder a supply every year.
