Review: A Must Have Book For The New D600 Photographer - I just made the switch from A Nikon 35mm camera to the D600 (my first professional/full-frame digital camera). To say I was intimidated by all the controls and options... and understanding the owner's manual, is an understatment. I know what I am doing and shot semi-pro for many years... but knowing what the various controls do is not the issue...knowing when to use which "options" and why is!!! This book was well written, easy to understand and the author gave his recommendations as to why a user would pick one "setting" over another. The book takes one through the basics and then progresses to the more advanced settings in later chapters. What made it easy to follow along (with my camera in hand) were the images of the menu settings and how to "scroll" through the many setting options available on this camera. After reading this book cover to cover (with my camera in hand).... I still use it as a reference.... but I at least now know what I am doing and why... I am ready for the "digital camera world"!!! This is a must have book for the new Nikon D600 camera owner. Enjoy your new camera... I am!!! Review: With such a very new Camera an exceptional reference book - It works! Reference books are to achieve a certain objective, and that is a step by step explanation of an item, and an ablility to quickly find the answer to a question later on. This book does very weill in all these areas. Each page addresses a different aspect of a very complete and big learning curve camera, with assignments at end of chapters to reenforce the previous content. A perfect match to the Nikon D600, a camera to behold.

More about learning photography than the D600
I got this book to help me understand my newish Nikon D600 (obviously). However, the book is more about photography basics than it is about the details of camera operation. For, say, a D3200, this would be proper, but I'm assuming that most people who buy this camera are reasonably experienced, either wedding/portrait pros, looking for a reasonably affordable full frame camera or advanced amateurs who want to move up from crop frame to full frame sensors. If you are reasonably new to photography, this book does discuss the discipline in the context of using a D600. If you are past the novice stage, you'll find that the book covers pretty basic stuff, like what aperture and shutter speed are and how to use the rule-of-thirds. If you have the basics, and want your time to be focused on learning your camera, look elsewhere. The coverage of D600 features is superficial and limited. I also bought Nikon D600 For Dummies , which does a decent job of describing camera functions in easy-to-understand language, though doesn't cover camera accessories like GPS or wi-fi dongles. The Dummies book does cover the Nikon Creative Lighting System and using accessory flashes pretty well.

Very helpful and easy to read!
I recently upgraded to the D600 and wanted to also upgrade my photography skills. I bought Mr. Sylvan's book and read it front to back and unlike many other such books, this one was easy to read and provided the info I needed on how raise my skills. I feel much more comfortable and knowledgeable after reading this book and feel it was well worth the money. Rob's writing style is down to earth, with very little techno-babble, so that even a novice like me could understand!

Easy to follow
I am really glad I got this book. It has helped me make the transition form a D-90. I am an amateur photographer trying to improve my images to reach my goal of taking shots worthy of what the D600 is really capable of producing. Sylvan's book has given me a better understanding of how to really make use of this camera. It is a great reference guide for a new user as myself.

nice intro to photography
Great introduction to the camera. It's more about taking photos than a manual for your D600 but that's good because you can take a lot of what's in the book into practice instead of just reading function X and function Y which you will soon forget. Would recommend to anyone with a Nikon camera that has similar features to D600. On D7000, D700 etc, the tips in the book should help.

For beginners...
The cover looked great but this book is for beginners who shoot in automatic mode. It covers the basics and not much more.

Nikon D600: From Snapshots to Great Shots by Rob Sylvan
A masterfully written and adequately illustrated book with lots of practical tips and exercises! Truly a must have for first time users of a complex modern camera like D600 which is a work of affordable (considering its capabilities and features though they should have put more quality into some of the moving parts (dials!)). The BOOK (returning to the original topic!) actually makes one brave enough to dip into the Nikon user's manual which is detailed but formidable in its crowding of descriptions that sent the finger scratching the head a few times, and I am no newbie to cameras including complex ones! :-) A MUST HAVE and MUST READ

A good buy
In spite of problems with dust on the sensor (Nikon will correct this problem free of charge), this is a superb camera. It gives non professionals the chance to use a full frame camera at a reasonable price. My landscape photography has been transformed by this camera. The detail obtained is incredible.
